THE AMAZING ACT THAT IS GHOST VS SANNE!

You know the night before Christmas and the night before that? When, as a child, your mind would run with dreams and possibilities. The taste of gold was close. So intoxicating that it was impossible to fall asleep. You were on the verge of something amazing. Then Christmas arrived and it was beautiful as expected. The album by Ghost vs Sanne is one of the finest releases of recent years and reminds me of those tender moments of Christmas. Emerging from a Swedish soundscape, the album, called “Hold This Girl”, is a smile from heaven that us lucky mortals have managed to get to hear through the power of music. Ghost consist of Ulf Lindström and Johan Ekhé who you might remember are the guys behind some of Robyn’s finest moments (nearly her entire first album, most of the 2nd and 3rd album including “Electric”, “Play”, “Keep This Fire Burning” and “Don’t Stop the Music”-the track that this very blog is named after!). They’ve also written the insanely catchy “Popstar” for Sita and Jon and “The Way I am” by Ana Johnsson. In short, Dontstopthepop legends. Indeed, check out Sanne's take on Keep This Fire Burning live in New York City last month!

Sanne and Ghost do their Keep This Fire Burning!

With Sanne Karlsson, they pool together all their brilliant discography and produce a very brilliant thing. Each track on the album is the next big thing. How dare they be so good? Sanne’s vocals are soothing and rival the likes of Mary J Blige. She refuses to scream the lyrics and allows the melody take control. The balance is perfect and as a result the album soars into DontStopthePop’s key album of the decade. This is the CD that Robyn could have released if the electro seductions of Klas Ahlund and The Knife hadn’t got to her. This is the CD that Amy Winehouse would, if she had the guts and tenacity, record. There’s a tremendous amount of soul on this album but don’t let that scare you. The set of songs cross genres. It can’t be too fused to RnB or pop however both fans of these crowds will be mightily impressed with the irresistible hooks and catchy baselines.

Hold This Girl

Portishead meets Robyn (circa third album)! This track is moody blues pop. Best way to describe it really. Gloriously rich with a brilliant polemic soundtrack. It really should have been the James Bond Theme tune. Seminal vocals from Sanne again. If you like Siobhan Donaghy and her Ghosts LP you’ll truly love this song and album.

Nobody’s Perfect

This track is perfect. This is about stabbing in the middle of the night. Sanne tells of a story of a man who did a girl incredibly wrong. It suddenly twists and emerges as an epic ballad from the perspective of a best friend and what she does to help this girl leave her man. There is a Nick Cave-Kylie Minogue “Where The Wild Roses Grow” feel to this. Rather than being immediate, the tension builds into something dark and yet freakily gospel-like. You can imagine Sanne singing this in a church come Sunday. You forget that this song is about murder.

Say Something

This begins with a throbbing electro baseline that reminds me somewhat of Robyn’s “Electric” and “Keep This Fire Burning”. Sanne informs the listener that the man upstairs bought a brand new suit and thus unfolds another provoking crusade about modernity. Once again, the chorus is epic without dripping in hyperbole. Sounds like a sinister version of Mary J Bliges “No More Drama”.

Don’t Look Back

Wow! Very electro layered with a RnB baseline. Annie of Norway would kill for a track like this. When the chorus of “you're just a liar and a snitch” kicks off you know this album is very special. Backed up with the kind of strings that we’ve not heard since “Keep This Fire Burning”, this song is a middle finger to the massive arty-farty electro scene that’s emerged out of the ambers of Annie’s first album. Don’t get me wrong, parts of Annie’s and Roison's albums are quite good it's just me likey big fat pop songs. Robyn’s “Be Mine” was one. This is a bit like that song. Except it also has elements of Christine Milton's and Remee’s “Superstar” in there too. This is Ghost vs Sanne in their element. I love it!

Oh My

Oh my indeed. This is incredibly catchy. It takes me back to the melodic progression of Robyn’s “Do You Really Want Me (Show Respect)”. A song previously written by Ulf and Johan! It comprises a perfect slice of Rnb and pop. While this a real sweet track Sanne’s voice ensures gravitas instead of the possible fluffiness that this song could have ended-up like in someone else's hands.

It Don’t Bother Me

Ghost vs Sanne enter the gospel-uplifting territory here. “It Don’t Bother Me” rekindles the soaring elements of Christina’s second album (see “Soar” and “Beautiful”) and the earlier tracks on the album. Ghost’s wonderful tricks of production and songwriting can be heard on “It Don’t Bother Me”. The song is about the same abject citizens of our society of Christian Falk's “Dream On”. However, Ghost pay tribute to Craig Armstrong, DJ Shadow and William Orbit here and Sanne goes wild with her vocals. Soothing, dark and reflective: it’s a 5:51 minute opus to unity and freedom.

A Little Love

Another epic song about needing a bit of love. If you're down, this track magically picks you right up. In A Little Love, the hybrid sound of Motown Electronica seals the album's fate as an earth-shattering and revolutionary pop album. As such this is Ghost vs Sanne’s signature song. Dipped with dystopian dreams, Sanne explains the world as she sees it and wraps her solution for the broken dreams with her soulful voice. Ace!

No One Knows

The Queens Of The Stone Age song of 2002. Ghost vs Sanne unweave the original to ensure a sickly sweet sinister yet beautiful new song. I forget the original. I am taken to a world of Blade Runner and the future of Ripley and the Company of Weyland-Yutani, who rules the world in search of the monster alien, where humans are suddenly expendable. Sanne’s voice embodies a moment of hope amongst the terror of a dark universe created within.

Make Me Suffer

Considering she’s on her 4th album I expected Anastacia to be doing a track like this. Still, Makes Me Suffer is perhaps the weakest track on the album. It refuses to mirror the groundbreaking mentality of the other songs on the cd. That doesn’t make it a bad song though. It is highly airtight, robust and recalls that 60’s girlband sound that made Phil Spector the man he is today. Its also a sound that Girls Aloud and the Sugababes are ramming home on their new releases. This makes “Make Me Suffer” the most commercial song Ghost vs Sanne produce and as such it would totally work on radio here in the UK. But it’s the sort of ground previously covered by the brilliant singer Ruby Amanfu and those aforementioned girlbands. I like this track, but it is not half as good as the other stuff.

Imaginary Friend

Starting off like a James Horner track, Imaginary Friend is a track Grace Jones would love to have on her Cd. In fact, half the music industry would kill to have a song of this supreme quality in their discography. There are so many sounds going on in this track that it demands a win at the Grammy Awards. Imaginary Friend is amazing. Sinister, funky, poptastic and soulful, it is all over the place. So multi-disciplined, one doesn’t know what to make of this track. This has the slick beats of Mary J Blige, the thumping thuds of Lauryn Hills first solo album, a catchy chorus of a lost ABBA track and all backed-up by something that sounds like “Bishops Countdown” from Aliens by James Horner. Messy, amazing and very stunning.

Time To Say Goodbye

Here we have another pop moment that is irresistibly catchy and returns to the 1960s. Unlike “Make Me Suffer” though, this track actually clicks. Sanne sounds like an early Timi Yuro while the production recalls the guitars of Kelly Clarkson's collaborations with Max Martin and Ruby Amanfu’s "For Life". A tight pop gem to end the album.

In conclusion, this album is very very very good. Too strong for its own good. They must come over to the UK. I'd love to see them live. Check them out & the album through their myspace (here).

ARMAND DELUXE: Never Forget (exclusive download)

NEVER FORGET-Preview (zshare link)

Never Forget
screams heightened pop of the highest orders. There I said it. It’s a song that is a truly global piece of songwriting with vocals coming from the Swedish pop princess Linda Stenmark, lyrics from the US and the rest by the producer extraordinaire Armand Deluxe who comes from Budapest. With the brilliant global number one “Star To Fall” worn as a badge of honour, the songwriter-producer has taken a new approach and this time its pure beautiful pop. The dance motifs are gently subdued and instead he’s teased out a sparkling pop range. Deeply connected to the likes of The Attic, Melodifestivalen, PayTV and brilliantly constructed melodies, Never Forget sounds so catchy it will hurt the morning afters.

Armand grips the mirrorball! Bring on the album!

The Armand Deluxe project promises to be one of a pop adventure & I am glad this blog is bucked up for the ride. Put this next to the best pop song St.Etienne never released. Or to put it another way Dontstopthepop is proudly here to reveal Armand Deluxe’s latest pop offering: he has neatly removed his dance crown & adopted a brilliantly camp tiara embodied by the song Never Forget. If you liked the recent output by those Swedish addictive popstars Danny, Jonah Hedqvist, Alcazar and Velvet you will adore the song and everything else that is to come from Mr.Deluxe. This is just the start of something very special from The House That is Deluxe.........

Don't Stop The Pop Gets all emotional (Robyn live-The Scala)

A few years ago Robyn entered the stage of Malmofestivalen. Back then the most famous Robyn song that had 'heart' in its titles was the ballad Underneath The Heart. It was also the first time she'd ever performed Who's That Girl and the audience were left screaming for more. And boy did she listen to those cries.

A year or so later, Robyn had set up her own label, released Be Mine and its follow-up was an amazing version of Who's That Girl. This time however it wasnt live-it was all finished off and neatly recorded in a studio. So anyway, last night she appeared at the major London venue The Scala.

The year has been quite amazing for the singer. She's expected to have her second single from her self-titled album enter the top twenty of the UK tomorrow and with The Scala being completely sold out I just wanted to take this little moment to take stock of things....

It seems like only a few moments ago she was there singing an amazing version of Janet Jacksons When I Think Of You & soaring versions of her songs Play & O Baby. Don'tStopthepop was created in her name (well, actually her 3rd album Don't Stop The Music).

She kept the 'pop' burning and this blog is all about celebrating that acute defiance of pop acts who bounce the pop from your mp3 player and into your eardrums.

Slowly but surely - and rather organically - the pop pioneer has been picking up more and more fans. More and more sites have rejoiced her brilliance and energetic performances-if you've seen her show you'll know exactly what I mean.

Buy Robyn's single here

Back then very few sites discussed Robyn. There was Jessica of DirrtyPop who still expresses the weirdness of hearing Robyn on UK radios and seeing her CD in UK stores without the import price tag. After years and years of writing about Robyn its both brilliant and overwhelming to hear & watch Robyn strut and ultimately say "hello, London!" just before she breaks into Be Mine. The experience is strange as a long-time fan of Robyn...but cool!

***
Sadly I couldn't make last night at the Scala. I've always tried my best to keep the blog and personal life quite apart. I mean this blog is about pop music! Nothing more! Oh and an overuse of exclamation marks. Well, I've been kinda sick and yet life goes on but its the medication that I'm taking at the moment that have made me slow things down just a tad. They are some amazing drugs-let me tell you that. They totally knock you out. Some hours your fine and the next your in bed dreaming about unicorns and thrones. So I couldn't go. I so wanted to! I was invited to the aftershow party which would have been fun. However, sometimes you gotta listen to what the doctor is saying. But that doesn't mean this place will stop. It will continue. The fire will keep burnin' and all that jazz.

So, sorry I couldn't be there-I so wanted to be. I truly did. However 2008 is looking like a great year for pop. Robyn herself has more exciting things in the pipeline which I will try my best to strut to the left and dance to the right. Those hardcore fans reading this will take pleasure in the knowledge that Robyn is doing her fifth album (confirmed on this very site) and has many things planned coming up in the future. Its been an amazing couple of years watching Robyn's star rise and musically spread. Robyn, tack så mycket!!!!

Major thank you to the lovely & sublime Mr. Baranyai for all the amazing pictures which are taken from her live UK dates.

Coming up: exciting things including the Pop Awards!

JONAH The World Exclusive Interview (as his single enters the Swedish top ten!)

TheWorldofJonah
Forget ya Dannys, Justins, Willys, Olas, Darrens, and Mans-lets get down to business here. We're talking pop business. Real, deep and hard. Thats how DontStopthePop likes its pop singers. Mean, gritty and a Gucci bag full of love, laughter and giggles. The high pitched popBoys in this popworld come and go but rarely do they seem to please the towers of DontStopthePop. In short DSTP has grown tired of boy pop princes. They appear to be nothing more than pretenders to the throne as one Henry Tudor might say. I desire something bold, honest, kingly and commanding. Yes-I want a singer with balls. Pop balls if you wish!

So step forward Jonah. The man is a legend to be true but what follows below is bewildering. DSTP has already featured him and it was so successful an interview seemed only natural. So two days ago an interview was done and today to DSTP's absolute joy Jonah's song Summer High has moved from no.14 in Sweden and has landed deep in the top ten of the Swedish charts.

As they say in Sweden "Veckans Smash Hit!"

Quite amazing! Oh yes, heads are certainly turning and very quickly too! This is a man who has sung and lived the words of I am What I am, danced with British rentboys, taught the lyrics of Eurovision failures to Saudi royalty and could literally teach a thing or two to our British pop male acts.......so on with the questions!

----------------------

First of all, let me say that you’ve had a great response after appearing on DontStopthePop a few days ago! Why’d ya think that is?

Because you British guys has such an excellent taste of course (laughs). To be honest I was really surprised when I discovered your site, the article and all the positive comments. Its very flattering!

One of our readers and one of your fans, Peter Lassing of Karlstad to be exact, responded by saying that you’d started in doing music years ago. He added “He was 12 or 13 something and already shining like a star. It was something very special about his appearance on stage.” What was the show and what do you remember from that time in your life?

Wow, what a compliment……..Oh god, what show was that?! Hmmm i can’t really remember what show it was but what I do remember is that in that exactly period I was really getting determined that I wanted to become a singer. I did shows and started to sing and dance more seriously and also had my first roles.

Well, I for one never knew you’d started doing music so young! What was your favourite production?

That i was in or that I looked at?!

Both!

My favourite musical I always wanted to watch was Fame. I had such a hard time to decide whether I wanted to be Nic who was this fabulous singer, soft and humble or Tyrone who was this cool guy and a greeeeeaaaat dancer. Its still my problem .... to be the humble, soft homestayer or that cool groovy partyguy! Hahahahahahaaha!!!!!

My favorite musical to be in was a stage-version of Bröderna Lejonhjärta by the Swedish favourite writer Astrid Lindgren. It’s such a heartbreaking story and is about two brothers. Bobby go and read it if you haven’t!

Will do! Now a lot of the replies ran with one major theme-that your a pop artist with a sense of dignity. How would you reply to that?

It’s really important to me to always stay true to myself and my heart... I hope it may shine through. For example I been asked to participate in the Swedish version of American Idol for two seasons and both times I’ve turned it down. That’s not my way of making music. I love the show but I wouldn’t like to be in it. For me music starts in the heart. Not in others expectations. That goes not only for music by the way! That’s also how i want to live my life. To get that no 1 hit or to get a worldwide breakthrough isn’t the most important thing you know...

So, straight to your music! Who are you working with on this album?

I’ve chosen a lot of different writers and producers for the album. All extremely creative and with a lot of experience. We also had a lot of songs send to us from other countries and some of them may be on the album. Your disco-icon and one of my old favorites Rick Astley wrote one of the songs I listened to earlier today hehe... Maybe I’ll add it. He was sooo cool at the height of his career. A keyperson in the whole affair is my 1st hand producer Anders Lundstöm. He is almost as much of the Jonah-music-style as myself. I love working with him!

Will the sound of the album mirror your first two singles or Summer High?

It’s more Summer High. Absolutely! But I’ll promise you; there will also be dance remixes (winks).

Theres a lot of love for Summer High! Will the album explore all the seasons of the year?

Of course... I love to give energy and make people dance and be happy.... but right now it’s alot of ballads in the making... those heartbroken ones... a typical autumn-phenomena... Songs for spring will also be easy... but winter??? Uhhh i hate the winter!

Ok, I’ve been lucky enough to hear some of your new sounds and its great. Although demos they all have that distinct quality based around your voice and sublime 1960’s pop molded into a 2008 disco hype. The decision to go with the Summer High direction will please many including myself. What are the songs your most proud about at the moment?

Hmm--- There is a song called "Walk with me" that i wrote myself that is very close to my heart at the minute. “Will you still love me in the afternoon” is also one of my favorites. It really puts my life together in a song hehehehehe...

Whats it about?

It’s about the feelings you have when you wake up to late for breakfast a sunday at noon.
But above all... I love "Look at me now". That’s a special song for me. Also a ballad as the other two. I hope it will be chosen as the next single. And "Play (If you)" is also fab... sexy dirty and very me. (Oh and Jonah winks again!).

Can you describe what you wanna do with your first album? And want you want to it sound like?

I want it to be a picture of me. Different sides of my person... You should be able to find songs suitable for every occasion: Like bringing me as your friend into different parts of your life. Suitable to dance to at the party, cuddle up with in the sofa those heartbroken nights with ben & jerry ice-cream and just the tv as comes on or to become the soundtrack of your wildest moments in bed...

Ahem. Perhaps a title then? What about “Jonah’s Arc”? Have you got to that stage yet? Of giving it a name?

Hehehe great title... but unfortunately I’ve already named it... "Welcome to my world”

If your sound as an musician had to be plucked out in just 5 key words I’d go with “groovy”, “pop”, “uplifting”, “Quirky” and of course “stylistic”. Would you agree with those & would you add any to those?

I think you say it really good there. Honesty is another word I’d like to use. As well as personal.

What three things since the release of your first single "I am What I am", are you most proud of?

Thats a though one. I’m proud of walking my own way. Instead of doing what everybody expected and to put all my life into becoming a popstar back then in 2001. When i was just 20 something i wanted to wait until the time was right. Now is that time. I’m older...But what the fuck who cares? Uhh 3 things.. that means 2 more... hmm need to think about that one...

Ok, I know your disco friends with fellow DontStopthePop favourites, Miss Match! Would you three ever consider teaming up to create a perfect slice of pop music? Perhaps special guests for your album?

Hehe... We’ve talked about it since we first hooked up when we were on the same tour around Melodifestivalen 2007... especially when we go out to a party we always end up talking about how fab it would be hehe... I love those girls! But now since Alcazar has re-united we had to make a promise to not do anything togheter for awhile... We don’t want the disco divas in Alcazar to be forgotten in the shadows hahahahaha!!!!

Now on Neon Nights, Dannii Minogue wrote and dedicated a song to her vibrator/dildo. The song was called Vibe On and despite never ever being released it’s a bit of a favourite. What aspects of your life are influencing the subjects that you find yourself writing about and putting to music?

Everything. Totally!

September
, Miss Match, Lucky Twice, Robyn, B-Tween, Danny, Magnus Carlsson, BwO….you can see where this is going.... Two questions. The first why is the Swedish pop scene so damn good? And secondly, where do you see your music and your style fit into that batch of singers?

First of all i do NOT agree with you.. I think some of these Swedish acts are really boring to be honest... But some of them are really super! Since ABBA we also had some strange self-confidence that we are a good music country... I think that helps... there are so many talented producers, writers and artists in Sweden... And somehow we all seem to get to be able to make magic... that’s the good part of being a small country. Hmmmm where do i find my music... well... thats a tough one though.

Out of all of those acts mentioned…which one would you
1) Go Camping with… 2) Go Partying with… 3) Collaborate on a Kylie tribute album…

Ok well I probably would say Miss Match on all three... but to make it more fun I’ll add some more!

i) love to go camping with Robyn (I’d love to have her for myself a couple of days!)
ii) go partying with September (she reaaaaaly knows how to party).
iii) To collaborate on a Kylie tribute album? That would have to be with Magnus (could it be more camp?)
iv) and go to bed with? BwO!

(I didn’t add part iv that was completely from the mind of Jonah!)

Can you tell the readers about the time you burnt the hotel down with the drag queen hostess Miss Matulda?

Once at a show in northern Sweden I was feeling sick, so I returned to my hotel room for some tea and lit a bunch of candles. Then I figured that wine would be a better cure, opened a bottle and then remembered that my friend, the drag queen hostess Miss Matulda, was in the room down the hallway. I went over with a glass for her as well. She was just in the middle of putting on her make up, so I went back to my room after ten seconds. When I opened my room door, I saw that the candles had set the whole curtain on fire. In shock, I figured the right thing to do was to immediately and take control of the situation for everyone’s best……..

So I managed to grab a hold of my Dolce & Gabbana’s and my designer stage clothes before the firemen pulled me out of the room. As the last to leave the building, I was standing face to face with about 50 firemen and police officers, but luckily for my guilty ass, no one was looking at me. Instead, all eyes were on the transvestite only wearing fishnet stockings, heavy eye-brows and a bare upper body.

Talking of burning down the house…Did you think Scooch deserved to do better at Eurovision?

I loved Scooch! Me and my best friend – a winner of Eurovision a few years ago - were watching it via satellite in Spain... I did the scooch-dance for the entire month in Puerto Banus And I even tried to teach a particular SchejkPrince from Arabia the lyrics. He loved the "coffee tea" part haha….

Are you yourself toying with the idea of entering the competition?

We are working on an entry for the Swedish competition. BUT my dream is to enter for England... yes you may think that seems strange but i have my reasons. And let’s face it... You could do with some Swedish help!

You’ve worked with Schlager legend Shirley Clamp. Would you ever consider releasing a schlager album (or perhaps just a bonus track?). I know its miles away from your current sound but I’ve always thought your deep vocals and a boy singing Linda Bengtzing’s “Alla Flickor” would be rather polemic! And an English version too?! I think we'd all love a male version of that Swedish classic!

Haha... I’ll perform it as a bonus on my first G A Y show... I promise you.

Am I right in thinking you taught arts at several universities in 2005?

Not arts... but performing arts... Well since 2000 really... mostly in sweden but also around Europe...

As it’s the title of your new single, what memory do you recall as a summer high? What made it so good? Was it “erotical” or “tragical” (or both!).

On my first visit ever to an English gay bar, my friends and I ended up having a bet about who would get the cute David Beckham-look-a-like that was strutting around looking delicious. I won, which was fun, but not as fun any more when I asked him what he did for a living and it turned out he was a prostitute! How did the night end? Well I didn’t have to pay!

---

So there you have it-Jonah Hedqvist: A Pop Legend!! He's obviously the most exciting male acts to step up to the microphone since, like whenever. He’s taught performing arts around the globe some of which included teaching Arabian royalty the naughty lyrics and dance steps to Scooch’s Flying The Flag. His album sounds poptastic and DontStopthePop has already pre-ordered five thousand copies to give to loved ones come Christmas time. What strikes me reading the interview back is how utterly distinct, mature & frank Mr.Jonah is and in a time when male pop acts seem guarded, manufactured and believe screeching is singing Jonah is one of a kind. Jonah is the perfect DontStopthePop popstar & we all await his next move with baited breath!

SHINE4 Ietsie Binne My-A MUST DOWNLOAD!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure if you know this but I've been pretty unwell recently. What has kept me smiling? Girl Pop and girlbands from around the globe. Yes seriously! Whether it be forgotten SuperSister b-sides or the Argentinian Spice Girls Bandana I've had a giggle and a dance despite it all. When the doctors hail from Colombia it's quite useful to break the bleak mood of the room by gossiping about Colombian girlband Escarcha! Believe me, girlbands have oddly worked their magic. So sit back people, I am sharing one of my favourite girlband tracks with you today! Shine4 are very special and if you take little listen to Letsie Binne My you'll hear why.

I've done a little research on information around this band and sadly no blogger has covered this song. To my knowledge anyway. However I do think readers of PopJustice, TheZapping, PopEatsPop, PopPosterGirl and Poptrash Addicts will adore what they find when they download the song.

They might also have to scrape their tongue off from the floor. Only because I had to when I first heard it. Shocked I was! I Was! Shine4 come from South Africa which is slowly creeping on Australia, Sweden and Spain as the country for poptastic pop! Don't believe me? Refer to the facts that Lisa Scott-Lee released her album there this year alongside the Phixx album and of course who could forget Hi-5-the boyband that cover Eurovision songs that actually improve on the originals.

This picture just might be the best picture of a pop band of the 00's.

Shine4 consist of Marlese, Liesl, Desiree and Jill. They've released about 2 other albums but its their most recent album So Elektries that has got me excited. Why? Well not only does it feature the hand of Xenomania but the girls also cover Transvision Vamp and Wilson Phillips, do PopEatPop covers of Elize's Automatic(!), Fredrik Kempe and Christine Stumer. Need we say more? Just go and buy it yourself over at very reliable Kalahari.net. Check out their earlier stuff too while your at it. Especially their cover of Dragostea Din Tea which saw the girlband gain a boy for one very special moment in South African pop history...

Ok so I would actually like to dedicate this post to Mike Of Poptrash Addicts (YAZZ!). I also wanna thank the YCTL flight-crew: Pinkie (I'm sure you'll love this fantastic PopEatsPop example), PopPosterGirl (my fellow South African pop fan!), SlippyDisco (hopefully we'll be singing the English version of the above song with the girls in 2 weeks!) and Paul!

ROBYN With Every Heart-Concert Of A Decade

In the past few days Robyn performed/released material in UK. I’d planned a review. I’d planned something “street-team”. I’d planned something fan-based.

Perhaps a bit kiss-ass. But That’s Ok. I’m a Robyn Fan.

Then I decided against all of that. The review. The set list. All scrapped. You can go to other places for those details. I want to do something else. Something for the fans of Robyn who were not able to attend the show.

You see reviews of amazing shows can be annoying for those who can’t be there due to time, geography, family responsibilities and work related issues. They read things that have passed. Its not nice. Its liking missing the last bus home when its raining…

So this is different. This is for the Robyn fans. Hopefully you!

Robyn performed a show in London on thursday. A concert for the fans. Some of which couldn’t make it. She exposed a physical existence of the exuberant. Something I noticed in Robyn all the way back in 1995. All her performances have that similar energy.

So what follows is a concert of sorts. A “set list” of Robyn’s best live performances of the past few years.

Most are from her Swedish only tours (Malmo, Malmofestivalen and Goteborg). They are extremely high quality and very rare. Most have only ever been performed for her home crowd and will never again appear on a Robyn set list. Like Play for example. Her recent shows, including those in Sweden, have utterly forgotten the second album. Not on this set list!

I want to share these songs especially for the fans that couldn’t make Cargo. So they can now nod their heads and sing along with fans who did manage to buy a ticket. Moreover, this is also to celebrate the week that sees Robyn's new album "Robyn" released in the UK. This concert took a decade to make, write, tour and produce...enjoy

Small words for each song

1. Intro/Breakdown Intermission-Performed at Malmofestivalen in 2003. Includes brilliant fan fare. Check out audience members screaming “hurry up!”.

2. Do You Know What It Takes
-This kicked off her 2005 Swedish tour for her Robyn LP. Robyn makes her 1995 hit single all electro with amazing results.

3. Medley/Konichiwa Bitches
-Performed as part of her 2005 Swedish tour in Goteborg. Includes her current UK single, Buffalo Stance and Leila K.

4. Blow My Mind
-Performed as part of her 2005 Swedish tour in Goteborg. Blow My Mind is from her Don’t Stop The Music LP. Originally a light electric ballad, Robyn morphs the production and turns it into a tribute to the 1980s, PWL and Prince.

5. Dream On
-With Christian Falk and Ola Salo from The Ark. This stunning song was performed on her UK dates. This recording is from the P3 Guld Galan last year.

6. Do me Baby
-And now lets step back in time. DSTP premiered this last year. Do Me Baby was originally supposed to be on the U.S issue of Robyn Is Here. Robyn gave it to the singer Michele. Recorded circa 1996? We don't know. Like all good pop concerts theres got to be a random lost track included for good measure and Do Me Baby fits the bill perfectly. Is it a Show Me Love part II? What do you think?

7. Play
-Robyn rarely performs songs from her second album. As you’ll hear, its amazing. Taken from her appearance at Malmofestivalen in 2003.

8. Should Have Known
-One of the highlights of the Don’t Stop The Music LP. So much so its featured in her recent tours and even re-recorded for the album released today. Robyn goes “gospel” towards the end of this song. A case of the live version being better than the studio mix. Taken from the same tour as the one above.

9. Electric
-The amazing lead single from My Truth. Sadly Robyn has never performed this song outside Sweden. This recording, like the one above, is taken from her appearance at Malmofestivalen in 2003.

10. Be Mine
-the hit single that launched her Konichiwa Records. Recording taken from her 2005 tour in Goteborg.

11. Crash and Burn Girl-An amazing performance of her fourth single from the Robyn LP. Recording taken from her 2005 tour in Goteborg.

12. Handle Me
-Taken from her 2005 tour in Goteborg. Includes all lyrics censored on the studio versions (both in UK and Sweden).

13. Bum Like You-
Absolutely amazing version of her album track. I have to say, again, the live version is so much better than the one of the CD. Recording taken from her 2005 tour in Goteborg.

14. Message In A Bottle
-A brilliant cover of the Police classic. Taken from her 2005 tour in Malmo.

15. Show Me Lov
e-The hit! Nowadays Robyn performs this song in a stripped down manner. Here is a recent recording of Show Me Love in all its glory! From Malmofestivalen in 2003.

16. Keep This Fire Burning
-A song that will always be in Robyn’s set lists! This version is amazing. From Goteborg in 2005.

17. Jack U Off-
Rip roaring cover of the Prince gem that Robyn simply loves to perform ever since she recorded the song and included it on the flipside to Be Mine. Taken from her 2005 tour in Malmo. Check out the audience going wild!

18. Eclipse
-One of Robyn’s best ‘slow-down’ tracks. Probably the defining Robyn song has ever recorded and in its live format it just blossoms. The pauses, the piano and the tears-simply beautiful. Recording taken from her 2005 tour in Goteborg.]

19. With Every Heartbeat-Performed with Kleerup. A very different version to the one available on the album and performed at her recent London shows. Nevertheless, it remains to be the most beautiful piece of music thats ever appeared on this blog and this "tour" is thus named after it. Performed this year in Stockholm.

Encore

20. Main Thing-Another long lost song from her second album that deserves a bit more sunshine. This song was written with Masters At Work and is a fan favourite. Sadly, Robyn has performed this only once! Performed in Stockholm in 1999.

21. Don't Stop The Music
-This storming song about fitting in and misfits is now a firm favourite amongst all fans. Criminally the single, which was covered by girl band Play, wasn't anywhere to be seen during her recent UK dates. Don't Stop The Music is the how this blog got its name! Performed during her show in Goteborg in 2005.

22. Nummer Ett
-To finish things up, a nice sing-a-long pop mini-gem performed when Robyn was about 12. Very much for the poptrash crowd!

NB: All recordings are bootleg and thus unofficial. They were recorded for fans by fans. Hope you enjoy. Buy the album today here and check out all the latest Robyn news here.

ANGELLE Walk Tall-A Must Download (Re-upploaded!)

Angelle is a diva. She's an icon of sorts. Probably the best pop product Birmingham has offered the world (yes, Jamelia go home now!). Her videos included a wardrobe of TX Maxx sort and lots of hooped earrings. She had own TV station (called Vibe TV!!!!) to promote her record Joy and Pain that was then replaced by a shopping channel and is now spewing out "material" similar to the wankstation Men And Motors. Excellent!

According to my intrepid pop savior (and Dont Stop The Pop reader) Chris, millions watched the channel which included a concert that culminated in a £3 million campaign for a song that entered no.43 in the charts. She was so unique the Guardian (such closet poptrash lovers don't you think?) did a full page spread on Angelle back in 2002. They stated:

"This [the t.v station] has all come about thanks to entrepreneur and millionaire Steve Bennett ..Steve is now nobbing Angelle....The first programme on the channel is Angelle In Concert, an amazingly slick production in a TV studio with six dancers, a six-piece band, four backing vocalists and more kit changes than Man United. Angelle lip syncs her way through some ballads that are pleasant in a "Sade is a bit dangerous" kind of way....The real weirdness starts with The Making Of Angelle, thankfully not a home video from a night of Brummie passion in 1979........."

Here's a youtube link for her single Joy and Pain. Angelle (real name Sarah Davies) recorded a brilliant pop album that never managed to find itself on the shelves but was released through her website.....

So today its all about the poptastic Walk Tall. It reminds me of Cathy Dennis during her great Guy Chambers days (before he worked with Robbie). It reminds me of the Kinks. It reminds me of William Orbit when he met All Saints (the chorus). It reminds me of Erasure (the backing "ooooohs" at the start). As a pop song its odd as it has a number of genres and a few hooks which oddly works! At first you think its a tribute to the 80's, then it turns to the 70's and then its all 00's. By the end it goes all 90's. It also the has the camptastic lyric "tonight...I'm feelin' tragic". In other words, Walk Tall is a pop gem...

Lovely!

Coming up on DSTP: something very special regarding Robyn.

LYNSEY SHAW OF ELECTRIC DOLLS SPEAKS TO DONSTOPTHEPOP

The Electric Dolls!

Seeing as Dontstopthepop loves girl bands it seemed natural to actually speak to a member of not just one poptastic girl-group but two! The Pop Princess Lynsey Shaw once belonged to the Stock/Aitken cult pop band Girls@Play (she was the cop) and now finds herself in the envious position of being a member the uberglam band The Electric Dolls. Although they've just begun their probably epic journey through Planet Pop! the Electric Dolls are already creating waves (groan!) within the music industry and beyond. They were girlband no.126 in our girlband essay and as you'll read below "legend status" is pretty much theirs before even a single is out...

Lynsey flaps her fans

DontstopthePop: Darling, you’re a pop legend! More than that, a Girlband legend-unlike many girlband members you’ve been in two. Two! Why, sweetie, why?

Linsey: Because I love my gals! I guess the time I had in G@P left me scarred for life and forever wanting to recreate the happy tour van of screaming women! Well kind of!? To be honest the visual impact of a gang of girls is very powerful and I like the concept & visuals that come with Electric Dolls. Maybe I just have a girlie dressing up fetish...??? It has been said before!

As a 14 year-old girl Loughborough lass what were you dancing to on your walkman when you should have been doing your history homework?

Do u know I have a very vivid memory of being at the bus stop on my way home from school at around 12 or so listening to a tape i'd made up of Elvis songs from my Dad's very large record collection. I think I still have it somewhere! I had a HUGE thing for Elvis, still do! (I was such a geek). By the time I'd blossomed & hit 14 it was Madonna all the way! Like A Prayer album probably!

I’ve always dreamt that the Girls@Play ‘shelved’ album somehow went missing Vicky Pollard style and found itself online. Tracks like Brand New Car and When Love Takes Over You sound rather enticing! Care to flare?

Well u remember more than me! When Love Takes Over You... god I'm not sure I can even hmmm it now! Brand New Car... well now there was a knee busting dance routine if ever I saw one! I remember feeling very proud of the fact that I got to wear knee pads for that... just like one of my heroes Janet Jackson. I believe I really was a part of the Rhythm Nation! "If you had a brand new car... u wouldn't get far with me!" Well you'll have to call up Mike & Matt and see if they can be persuaded to put all the old tracks together and get the album out there.... finally! Otherwise, check out myspace. I'll see if I can get Brand New Car up there soon! ;-)

Are you aware that Girls@Play have a huge cult following?

Girls@Play: LoveThis Babes

Well I have an inkling in that every now & then I'll get a text or a call from a friend in a club somewhere who's listening to us being played or they have the video on a big screen, we're talking mainly gay clubs here! I also was quite chuffed to see that one of the comments on youtube about Airhead was from a fan in New Zealand who loved G@P... couldn't believe they'd heard of us in that hemisphere!!

What did you do with your baton?

Oh... I still have it! As I always used to say... "Every mark on it (still) tells a story"! I have all my cop outfits and hardware!!!! Apart from a pair of handcuffs that got confiscated in Barcelona airport! Now you try telling airport security you're in a girlband, and that's why you're carrying handcuffs and a night stick, with only pictures and hand gestures! That WAS funny!

Is Thursday pink or purple?

Purple... Wednesday's pink.

What are Electric Dolls about and why they stand out from other girlbands?

Well... check out the look for a start... I think we stand out! Hopefully visually & musically. We're Barbarella, meets stepford wives, meets Gwen Stefani, meets Madonna, meets Spice Girls, meets Prince... now there's a great dinner party guest list! Or as we say on the myspace site we're bit of Gwen, a bit of Prince, a bit of Madge & a bit of chintz! And to go with the image & quirky style, lyrics & music in a quirky style! Ta-dah!

The straight boys at my local comprehensive often talked about baps. Often after football in the showers. I thought they were praising the qualities of the canteen sandwiches. I’m thinking Baps R Baking is also about sandwiches. Am I wrong?

Yes it's about fluffy fresh bread baking in the oven. Mmmmm don't you just love the smell of baking bread? Not a smell you'd usually equate with dancing in a club, granted, but then who wants usual? I am, after all, a great cook and it seems the boys at your school obviously appreciated good baps when they saw them!

Would you be the bread or the ham?

Oooh the ham in a Sawyer (from Lost) & Michael (from Prison Bake... I mean Break) sandwich!

There is something really Gilbert & George about Electric Dolls. Its like if you were artists you’d be in Tate Modern before you can say Tracey Emin. Why’d ya think that is?

Oooh I like that! I was thinking more Pierre et Gilles but I like Gilbert & George too! Maybe it's because when i dream it's not only in colour but in Pop Art too!? Also my parents influence (both trained artists) and my art & fashion college background!? What do YOU think??

Who is more respectable? Girls@Play or Electric Dolls?

"We ain't never gonna be respectable!" Period! (Or have any respectable periods).

When is the Electric Dolls album due?

Well we need to get the material together first. It's all hectic in the studio at the minute! I'm in tomorrow and was there today. We're working hard, writing new songs all the time in the Baps style! New tunes include a track called Supercute & another called Love Me Long Time all coming to a myspace near you very soon! But when we're ready we'll get our toned Dolly asses to a record campany & thrash out a deal...(yes A&R people form an orderly queue).

Electric Rabbit or Electric toothbrush?

Erm do you mean the energiser bunny? I'm not sure what you mean? Well you'd have a job cleaning your teeth with the rabbit but you could probably improvise with the toothbrush... but erm lets just say they each have their time, place and value.

Dannii or Kylie?

Kylie Kylie Kylie!

Barbie or the Britney Spears doll?

Does the Britney Doll come with a shaved head, portable re-hab clinic, a trailer & 2 disposable babies???? Britney Doll for sure... with changable wigs & cigarette holder!

Should a song that asks whether Europe wants “some salted nuts” really represent Britain at Eurovision? (I’m talking of Flying the Flag by Scooch)

Hmmmm good question! I mean it worked for Chef from South Park didn't it? Although the items in that song were chocolate balls... I have to say that if we can even consider Jordan, pregnant, in pink rubber, it really does throw the doors wide open doesn't it!? I say good luck to them! I think that's all a girl in a band who wrote a song called Baps R Baking can say!

And lastly, Can’t Get You Out Of My Head or Outta My Head?

Aaaaaah that's too hard! I have to go with Outta My Head... it has too many lovely memories attached to it for me to deny!

I'd like to thank Lynsey, Electric Dolls and Mac for the photos!

Lene Alexandra Øien My Boobs Are Okay

"I keep my religion in a Gucci purse/Oh my god I forgot the rest of this verse"

What do you do if you mashed up Victoria Silverstedt, Dannii Minogue, Gwen Stefani, Pay-TV and Margaret Berger? The Norwegan poptrash princess Lene Alexandra Øien! In "My Boobs Are Okay" Lene deconstructs, seduces and satirizes to such a hyper-extremity I am rather breathless. The video is just as sublime as the song....

BOYS TOWN GANG Cruising The Streets-12" Mix (perhaps NSFW)

"I swear even cowboys like to strut too"

When Steps and Scooch were merely atoms of a gay tomorrow Boys Town Gang were the pop group that lovers of disco trash lapped up pornowhore-style. The glorious site Discog states that despite the death of disco some months beforehand "clubgoers, especially the gay ones, hadn't stopped dancing, it was just that the high energy music of 1978 and 1979 wasn't being produced or released by late 1980 early 1981." Immediately they took off....sort of!

The stars of show were Cynthia Manley and Jackson Moore but as you'll hear on Cruisin' The Streets the music itself was just as epic. With odes dedicated to gay cities and bum sex between men you can sort of understand why Boys Town Gang were rebuffed. That didnt matter to the group however and in true subversive meriment they made sure their 12" versions were so pornographic the listener couldn't help but laugh. For example they finish up Cruisin' The Streets with "stuff that sausage in me" like it was a dance step ala Macarena or the Boogaloo. Absolutely trashtastic!

When queer theorists, NME journalists and cultural voxpops herald the groundbreaking hardcore gay antics of the crap Frankie Goes To Hollywood it would be wise say "meh" and pour a glass of champers for BoysTown Gang: the forgotten and fabulously filthy pop band of the early early 1980's.
