Cards on the table, I think Lady GaGa is a tad overrated and no one illustrates this better than the amazing Lolene. Not quite nu-wave, electro, rnb (but dables in all these genres)...she is doing her own thing and I love it when pop leaves the framework. Lolene is a new singer but she's been on the scene for some time. Very British, she earned her mirrorball points working with Roni Size. Personally, I think she's the best thing to come out of Bristol. If you want to place her, she sounds most like Gwen Stefani only better. The tracks on her myspace are very unique. Even the ballad, "Homeless", is a rather sublime. She's incredibly versatile. I am sure she's at home performing her addictive beats in some country fair in Somerset and disco strutting outside the Viper Rooms in LA. Its very early days yet but the kooky elements to songs like the amazing "Club Shit" illustrate that she's a major player for 2009-2010. In my world anyho.
Lolene has been spending her time writing for major artist with the legend that is Andreas Carlsson (Backstreet Boys, NSync, Celine Dion). So major kudos there. She also written for Pink, Rihanna, Beyonce, Britney Spears, Nelly Furtado, Timberland, Harvey Mason Jr and Christina Milian. Very very impressive. Each song includes great lyrics like being disco balls, soho dolls and running down the Kings Road like a maniac. The lead single "Boujis Baby" slips into Betty Boo-esq Rnb/Rap but the rest of her stuff is a bit more dance-pop orientated. Thankfully. For sure, the debut single is rather good but Lolene is certainly strongest when she lays down dancier disco beats. Take "Carousal" and "Sexy Peope" for example. They absolutely throb.
I am gonna be abroad for a bit! See you all soon!
