SOMEWHERE OVER THE DISCO RAINBOW WAY UP HIGH!-THE BRILLIANCE OF MECO

There are 20th century greats of music and Meco is one of pop giants that must be recognized as one of the finest individuals who ever graced planet pop. Hyperbole. I know. According to researchers January is known as the month when people get depressed and I am missing my babe who is busily studying in Spain. Its also my birthday on thursday so I thought I needed a double dose of something shimmering with poptastic beauty. Yes yes, this time can be known as the traditional month when many are down which is why I had to do this post.

So who is Meco!? Well, born Dominico Monardo he is most famous for imprinting a disco beat over the theme to Star Wars but for me its all about his amazing out of print re-working of The Wizard Of Oz. This musical is already camp as tits. But Meco thrusts a mirrorball over the yellow brick road thus creating perhaps the campest, most happiest product ever put to music. Believe me, take Kylie's So Now Goodbye, Your Disco Needs You, Disco Down, Love Boat, nearly everything by Donna Summer, Barry Manilow and Gloria Gaynor and put them into one entire record. You get Meco's amazing The Wizard of Oz. Sadly compared to his work on the Star Wars themetune there isn't much online in the way of music snippets but I highly recommend you watch this great clip:

History hasn't been kind to disco. Often insulted and described as poptrash. Known as the bottom of the bottom of the barrel and ritually burnt in arena's across America! Never receives radio play now and never given the respect it deserves. There is this however. Meco's amazing The Wizard Of Oz is out of this world. It transcends. It is a fine piece of artistry. I studied music for a few years (nothing fancy just AS level and clarinet on mondays). I don't know much but I can tell when something is complicated and rich. Meco's work is not lazy or run of the mill. It is disco but it is beyond chintz. It is not tacky. It is pure magestry. It is not ironic. It is wonderfully creative.

Released in 1978, it included amazing multi-layered melodies from the classic Garland movie simply re-done with synths, keyboards and the all important samples. There are also brilliant sound excerpts like the barking dog Toto, the melting witch and lines from the movie. You've got to remember this is 1978 and there were no such thing as samples! The dog was Meco's dog and witch was girlfriend. These snippets were interplayed into the general wall of sound making sure a story was told and laugh was to be had at the same time. Furthermore, a rollercoaster ride through forms of music was also ensured. Meco was a pop pioneer and paved the way for so much what we take for granted now. He saw an old score, which was brilliant in its original state, and paid tribute to it by actually keeping hold of that magical stardust of the story and theme while also introducing wonderful disco baselines to it. There are tender moments as well as hilarious sing-a-long sections making it a true find in ones record collection.

Let me just add that Meco simply didnt introduce a disco beat. His re-working of a classic is so much more than that. It starts off with a roaring dance version of Somewhere of the Rainbow but this is nothing like many equally wonderful covers of the same song. This then merges into the cyclone and the listener is wonderfully taken into the tornado that threw Dorothy to the land of Oz. The strings kick-in and the tension rises. Toto starts barking, cows start mooing as they fly in the air and Dorothy's world is turned upside down. Slowly but surely the house is forced into a realm of the unknown and the disco bells announce the arrival into, or rather on, MunchkinLand. Then the Munchkins sing "Ding Dong the Witch Dead" and what a smile will come across ones face when they sing the chorus. I think I'll have this played at my funeral. Most certainly. Its those electronic synths with the melody of the song that make it so great. And ever so cheerful.

Again, as they rejoice in the death of the wicked witch Dorothy is sent on her way but this is interplayed with snippets of Somewhere over the Rainbow. Its a strange mash-up but it absolutely works. This evolves into "Lions, Tigers and Bears-Oh My!" which is one of the campest moments in music history. Can you imagine it? That most famous line in film history merged with a disco baseline! Pure and simple magistery.

I could go on and on about this. I really can't convey how wonderful the piece of work it is. Indeed, I might just say one thing. When the female chorus sing the "you're out of the woods, you're out of the dark, your out of the night, step into the sun, step into light" in whats otherwise known as Optimistic Voices one feels absolutely lifted. To me, it also sounds like a multitude of DJ's have somehow managed to take, or rather absorb, a few tricks and trades from this soundtrack. Optimistic Voices is very close to that legendary 1990's hit single by Mouse T Horny. The string arrangements throughout the course of the soundtrack are also rather reminiscent of recent releases by well-known Swedish schlager hits. Its all in there...

Meco was a very special individual. All the talent of a Mozart and energy of Giorgio Morodor. This re-working proves it so. The original writers of the soundtrack to the Wizard of Oz, Harold Arlen and EH Harburg, were ultimately paid the highest tribute and compliment with this amazing disco "remix" of their most famous work. The original score will always be iconic and simply adds to the overall joy and warmth which makes the disco re-working something very special indeed. This is music at its finest. It sounds so simple, fun and breezy but if you start to take it apart its actually pretty complex. Meco was a legend. A songwriting genius!

DONTSTOPTHEPOP INTERVIEWS KATE RYAN!

Kate is a pop princess. A pop legend! She's just released her fourth album & her current material is doing rather well around Europe. Dontstopthepop had a little chat with Ms.Ryan on all things pop, her future & her famous moment at Eurovision where she really should have won (and would she represent the UK next year?)....

You have a cult following in the UK, and with the success of Robyn, September, Alphabeat and Basehunter there is a real taste for Europop here. The very type of music that you’ve been doing for some time. Will there be any UK promo coming up?

For the moment the focus is on the release of my latest album ‘Free’ in 30+ countries in Europe, Middle East and Asia. Our team at Universal Music International in London is preparing the release for the UK & Ireland as we speak, so stay tuned. In the meanwhile my previous album ‘Alive’ has been released to warm things up a bit.

How do you feel about your latest album?
I was involved in the whole process of writing and arranging the songs so I am really happy. This is my fourth ‘baby’, but it’s my favourite.

Is this the message about “Free”?

I feel
free in everything I do so that was an obvious title. The title also fits with the previous album titles ‘Different’, ‘Stronger’, ‘Alive’.

Your albums are pure pop. Relentless beats. For the discos and dancing around in the bedroom-and of course right before summer-perfect timing! Are you living out your pop dreams?

Every album I make I try to bring out the best of myself, my co-writers and producers. My previous album was a lot more pop oriented, but somehow for this one we went back to a more dance feel. Call it dance-pop.

In other words would you see yourself doing any other form of music?

I could see myself doing all kinds of music. I like rock, r&b, dance, soul…But dance is what I am best at and most appreciated for.

You covered the British girlband Clea and their 2006 classic “I Surrender”. It’s a dontstopthepop favourite and I am so glad its been given a second lease of life. Thank you! Will you release it? Its an amazing track!

When I first got the demo from the record company I didn’t know it had already been released. We worked hard on it to make it sound great and it worked. The track is on my new album and might be released as a single.

You’ve got a massive gay following. How do you feel about that?

I am really grateful for the support I get from the gay community. Last year I also wrote the official anthem for the Eurogames 2007, the gay community Olympics you might call it. I was really honoured when they asked me. The track is called ‘We All Belong’ and is also on the album.

If there was any other female singer out there who would you most want to do a duet with?

Madonna, no doubt ! On the other hand maybe that way she would lose a bit of her superstar status for me and I need someone to look up to!

Talking of which, I love Soraya of Spain. You’ve collaborated for this album. How did that come about?

We were discussing different possibilities with our Spanish label and they asked if I would be interested in doing a duet with Soraya. She is also a dance/pop singer and has huge success in Spain, so I didn’t doubt for a second. We are actually working on an other duet which will be on Soraya’s new album, set for release by the end of the year.

Are you going to put this very dance-pop album on stage and tour it?

I am currently touring throughout Europe with my band and of course we are playing tracks of the new album. It’s great.

I loved your Eurovision performance but was quite bemused when suddenly right when you were about to change key there was a shot of someones foot. Random! What happened?!

Yeah, the director did some strange things during my performance. Of course I only saw that afterwards so I didn’t realise all those weird shots had been shown.

UK came last…again this year! Would you ever represent the UK and save us from coming last come 2009?

Eurovision was a great experience for me, but I don’t think I will ever compete again.

You went no.1 in Swedish Itunes chart and in the normal charts it went to no.2 with your latest single. Congrats! How does that feel? They seriously know good pop when they hear it!

Sweden is my second home. I spent so much time there writing, composing and recording that I feel very well there. Music must be one of Sweden’s biggest exports, the really have the knack for hits. That makes it even more special to get a #2 spot in the charts.

You are certainly keeping pop very much alive. Is that your passion? You don’t stop the pop...

Music is my passion. I can not imagine a life without it. I am happy that other people can enjoy themselves with my music.

Do you ever get nervous when performing or is it so natural now that you just enjoy the ride?

Let’s say I’m excited before a show, and a bit nervous. But once my bands plays the intro and I walk on stage the stress changes into shear enjoyment.

When I first heard your Spinning Around it was on a friends Ipod that I’d borrowed. I ended up dancing madly. I think it was on the bus. And, by the way I wasn’t drunk. I think I even did some retro robotronic moves. So thanks for that! I loved Spinning Around. Alive was an amazing pop album. Do you ever dance to your music and if not…then which female singer has had you going wild in public?

To be honest when I am in a club or out on the town and the dj puts on my record I run for the toilet…I am very proud of what I do, but very shy when people start looking at me in a club for example when my music’s on, so you will certainly not find me dancing to it. I really like Robyn, Kylie, Madonna, Amy Winehouse,….

The music industry is changing so much. Its moving in the hands of the fans, the artists and most importantly away from the majors. Where do you see yourself in this ever evolving world of music?

I consider myself very lucky to still have a deal with Universal Music. They are doing such a great job at promoting my music all over Europe that I feel that the role of the majors is not over yet. I even feel they are a bit underrated for the moment. It’s amazing to have a team of people working for your success. That’s also why I am dedicated to doing my very best and not letting anyone down, be it fans, my entourage or the record label. Everybody is working really hard, and I hope we will have great results.

LA CASA AZUL-ESTA NOCHE SOLO CANTAN PARA MI-LEGAL DOWNLOAD!

Ok. La Casa Azul are one of the finest bands to come out of Spain ever-simply perfecta! Also one of the oddest. What you see is not quite what they are. Is it just a boy or is it five groovy singers who look like they came from the Spanish version of The Brady Brunch? Very cute and extremely addictive-they are pop but, Jim its not as we know it. Let me talk about the music. The sound is an amazing and unique elasticated and refined pop music of the 1960s, '70's and disco of the early 80's. Their mode of pop is dripping in sugary sweetness but don't let your mind immediately jump to the likes of Steps and A*Teens. This project is quite far removed from such ventures. The albums contain shameless disco claps, flutes that shimmy into the sky and midi-synths which cruise into vocoders like two flower powered lovers grinding to a halt somewhere in the Castro district of San Francisco.

Engineered & produced by one of the sublimest name in pop Guille Milkyway, La Casa Azul enrich their sound with the surf-sands of The Beach Boys, ABBA and of course the Electric Light Orchestra. Dusty Springfield would dance to them if they were around back in the day. The sound effects are glorious, chirpy and you almost feel like you've walked into a shagadelic club on the right side of Paris with Andy Warhol pouting to the left and Dionne Warwick dancing to the right.

Lets take a look at them. Take their brilliant about their video for Superguay (the song itself a tribute to Petula Clark and early disco). You don't have to understand a word of Spanish to love everything about the single/video. The disco beats of the themes of Dallas and Charlies Angles mixed in with the chimes of I will Survive.

They bring out the obvious Brady Bunch influence on their video for "Como un Fan". The song itself is simply a dedication to the 70's but wait to the end. It goes all vocoder-ish. I adore it:

The production have managed to squeeze the best of pop music of the last forty years into just a few minutes. For this La Casa Azul must be celebrated. In their latest video, La Revolocion Sexual they refer to Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Buck Rodgers. As you can see, the band become robots & chaos ensues on the sci-fi dancefloor.

The song has edited and been picked by the band to represent this years Eurovision for Spain and I think it has a fighting chance (you can hear the new version on their myspace). Its in the pre-selection and will make Spain proud if sent to Serbia. The lovely people at their record company Elefant & La Casa Azul have allowed Dontstopthepop a rather exclusive legal download of Esta noche sólo cantan para mi. Its a mixture between Kylie's Disco Down and The Boss. It even quotes Elton John, discopop and northern soul. I hope you like! I can imagine this band as being huge this year (albeit if they recorded some of the songs in English). The band are everything that is right with the Spanish pop industry.

Today is a real celebration of 2001! It doesn't feel like it was 7 years ago but there you go! Oh the memories! Ok, this one is for the boys of Vauxhall, the dancing queens of Denmark and party princesses of Berlin. Its electro, its pumping and it recalls some brilliant early 2000 baselines that Europe is famous for. No Angels are considered as the mighty German girlband of the family of Popstars shows. Monrose have nothing on them (yet!) and lets not even talk about The Preluders. The fact that they’ve had huge successes both musically and commercially proves this point. Not only have No Angels survived the fate that befalls many girlbands (where are Expose, Eternal and SWV?) and Popstar bands (where are Excellence, Truebliss and Bardot?) but they’ve reached the pinnacle of producing a greatest hits album-something which very few bands produced out of the Popstar format ever manage to reach.

However, to me it’s all about the girlband that wasn’t the winning band. The German “Phixx” if you will. You see, while No Angels produced some great albums, Fresh*n*Juicy produced two great singles that I treasure quite madly. If I had to save either debut singles by each band from a burning flat, I’d choose the Fresh*n*Juicy Cd over Daylight In Your Eyes every time.

Take their track Dub-I-Dub. As you can see it’s a cover! A full set of A star marks awarded to the band for covering the pop legends Me&My but they also manage to actually improve on the Danish original. You’ve got to take your mind back to 2001. No Angels had released Daylight In Your Eyes. Despite not being chosen to be in No Angels, for being too poptastic I suspect, Fresh*n*Juicy decided to put on their hotpants, sequins and dig out their favourite Danish pop tracks. They released two singles. Dub-I-Dub and Life Is What You Make Of It. Both of which are poptrash anthems. Their version of Dub-I-Dub is just sublime and will always be my Ipod favourite. Yes it was probably far too clubby to ever reach the charts. Even for Germany! But its wonderfully trancy. If only No Angels had as been poptastic! Just think of the possibilities!!!

Fact: They consist of Franzi and Juana

Fact: Life is What You Make Of It sounds like a cross between Gina G’s Just A Little Bit, Boney M and Army of Lovers.

Fact: Their song “Touch” is a piece of Europop gold-dust.

I.N.G Lucky Star or 外太空到地心 你就是

Why is it that song's dedicated to the concept of being lucky, whether it be in the infinitive or about the article, are always absolutely catchy. Evidence? Kylie's infamous I Should Be So Lucky, Britney's dedication to the fallen star in Lucky, Madonna 1980's electro monster Lucky Star, Clea's Lucky Like That and of course Lucky Twice's Spanish hit single Lucky. Well with Lucky Star the girlband I.N.G released one of the finest pop songs released in the "Central Kingdom"-this is the literal meaning of the China! And, with so many European acts on DSTP I thought it would be good to venture east. Indeed, DontStopthePop was always about pop acts from all corners of the world and its shocking that its never featured an act from Taiwan. Please please forgive me. The video includes tutus, some great dancing, planets and a skipping rope. I love it

Ok so, I.N.G are a girlband (Duh!). They consist of Ida, Nara and Gillian. As you can see the idea of taking the first initial to make the bandname deserves its own little footnote in the grand encyclopedia of girlbands (see R.a.e.n, T.e.a.r.s, Clea, N.K.D). Right so I.N.G started off well. Their hit single Lucky Star is an Über (yeah-people, I used the umlaut!) pop song and it has become an anthem amongst many Taiwanese teenagers. The album it came from didn't do so well even if it featured a Chinese version of Ilarie. However the Chinese pop scene is a hugely crowded place and I.N.G often faced major criticism for they were too similar to the huge Chinese supergirlband S.H.E. The knocks were bound to come but I think they're still together and are readying themselves to release another album.

Much has been made of the growing political power of China and I think you hear it in this song! What?! Yes! Hear me out. Ok Lucky Star is a cover-its written by a Swedish team. It came out a year or two beforehand in the UK and Europe as Karma Club. Their version is a bit mediocre. For sure its in English but it lacks any sparkle. Theres no bounce to the original. She - the singer - could be reading out the bus timetable for all it mattered. The singer on the original Lucky Star was probably thinking whether she'd left the kettle on back at home when she recorded her vocals for the song. The production is monotonous and even the production lacks something. The vocoders don't do anything and sound like a last-ditch effort to save the song. (NB: Seeing as this place isn't about negatives the remixes for the Karma Club version are absolutely amazing. In the delightfully named "Spank@TheOysterBar Mix" they use the exact melody of the Fever Tour version of Come Into My World performed by Kylie and mash that up with Donna Summers I Feel Love to produce a chilling and rather epic dance track of the sorts I've not heard in yonks).

But back to Taipei! So a year later and I.N.G come in and mutate the mere b-side of a song to pop brilliance. They've added some amazing sitars, the vocals are poptastic and in the backtrack I am sure I can actually hear bubbles. Its not in English but you sing along nevertheless. That, my friends, is the strength of a song I guess. But it just goes to show that occasionally production and writing great pop songs isn't always necessary about the writers or the studio behind the song itself. The act, the context and the background of the Chinese track also adds something-an X factor perhaps? People often say that its the production team and its writers that make the pop song go pop. Well in this case its not so. I.N.G slap the hell out of the original to expose one of the finest songs of 2006. It is this reason why I feel Lucky Star represents something brilliant and the political future of China. To be sure, its a rough metaphor but i think it kinda works. Simply put-something European simply wasn't as good as a pop product with the stamp 'made in China' marked all over it.

LOKITA Lokita

In a very strange somewhat telepathic coincidence, todays selection was also recommended by one our fab readers! I'd originally planned to feature the fierce "girlgroup" Lokita as the initial act in "Catchy-Week" but they got bumped down the list after acts like Edurne upstaged them. Thursday was their day to appear on DontStopthePop and oddly Jose Viruete (one of this site's readers) recommended the band at three pm today! Talk about reading minds! Check out this amazing performance of their song on Youtube. How cute is the bewildering alliance of J-Pop and Spanish pop music!!!! Unique indeed!

Lokita are symbolic of how great, colourful and variable the pop scene of Spain is at the moment. They consist of two girls and a boy who looks amazing in his stilettos and beautiful eye-liner. You just wouldnt see a band of the likes of Lokita on British TV. Mika or Jake Shears is as "eclectic/transgressive" as pop gets in the UK. In Spain, its not the case. Putting aside the brilliant Jonny and his corset the group recall the poptastic days of Dana International, Bananarama and Me&My. In other words-I love LOKITA! They are wonderfully gay, pop and know the power that is often lost in the genre of bubblegum pop.

Lokita DontStopthepop looks forward to your album and is a firm fan of everything you will ever produce! You embody everything that I adore about Spain! Gracias!

*Next up something either Swedish or a pop princess from the Spanish province of Malaga!*

GIRLBAND LEGENDS: The Classic Girl Groups

It’s a bit wrong to put these great masters of the girlband all together but sometimes catagorisation is quite necessary. Some have questioned the lack of the appearance of The Supremes in DontStopthePop’s exploration of girlbands but Diana Ross and her girls is a road often traveled. The point was to expose girlgroups that rarely get mentioned by the media, discographies, genealogies and biographies. Part of the reason for DontStopThePop existing is to discuss pop that is undeservedly forgotten. It isn’t about zeitgeist or the latest starshine music, on the contrary pop that features here usually comes from acts that history forgets.

This update is huge so forgive the lack of the depth in some cases. It has utilised the pop knowledge of Pinkiedust over at YouCallThatLife who has submitted some of long lost girlgroups you see here today and his assistance has been more than helpful. All of these girlgroups are legends in their own right and they’ve shaped the current music sense. The Supremes feature down below but not in the traditional sense…

Girlband Classic Legend No.1: The Girlfriends

The Girlfriends were an off shoot of the well-honed vocal session group called The Blossoms who appeared on many releases as backing vocalists of much of the Phil Spector 1960s output. If you listen to their My One and Only Jimmy Boy you’ll hear a startling closeness to the glamrock baseline of T-Rex of 1970s, ABBA, much of the thumping baseline of Swedish schlager pop queens Carola, Nanne, Magnus Carlsson Linda Bengtzing and Shirley Clamp. The starting claps are little previews of the disco scene that was about to explode twenty years later. Again, quite groundbreaking. My One And Only Jimmy Boy

Girlband Classic Legend No.2: The Cinderellas/The Cookies

Take the baseline of The Cinderellas' Baby Baby I Still Love You and you can almost sing ABBA's breakout Eurovision hit Waterloo over the top. The closeness is actually quite shocking. If you thought the electro pop of Sweden and the ubercool Goldfrapp motifs were traceable back to the 1970s you’d be understood but misplaced. The Cinderellas and their music is pretty much an amazing prologue to the pop history we enjoy today. Baby Baby I Still Love You

Girlband Classic Legend no.3: The Exciters

The Exciters original version of Tell Him was covered by Billie Davis who rudely made it the hit that everyone knows and adores despite being a girlband classic. The American girls are probably the most unluckiest band in pop history as their follow-up single Do Wah Diddy flopped for them but because a huge hit for Manfred Mann who took the song to no.1 in the US, UK and around the world. All of which makes the girls absolute legends. Tell Him

Girlband Classic Legend no.4: The Honeys

Get ready for a slice of absolute pure classic pop music. The Honeys were formed in 1963 by Brian Wilson who this month is the centre of attention at the Tate Gallery in St.Ives. They consided of girlfriend (and future wife), Marilyn, her sister, Diane, and their cousin, Ginger. Yes, if you thought the only Ginger in a girlgroup was the Spice sort you’d be wrong. Quite freakily, Ginger was the first girl in the group to leave when she went to sing backup for The Supremes. In 1983, Mariyln, Diane, and Ginger reunited as The Honeys and released their first LP, Ecstacy, under that name from Rhino Records. Five years later, in 1988, Rhino Records released a CD compilation that included the entire Spring album, all the Spring and American Spring singles and B-sides, and a few additional bonus tracks. The One I Can’t Have is so poptastic its like hearing the future sound of Eurovision, Scandipop and SAW all wrapped up in one song that lasts just one minute and 54 seconds. The One I Can't Have

Girlband Classic Legend no.5: The Velvelettes

When one of your songs has been sampled by Betty Boo and covered by the likes of Bananarama and Buffalo G (!) you deserve legendary status. I am of course talking about The Velvelettes' hit single He Was Really Saying Something. The girlgroup formed at their university (WMU) and are still together! Despite being signed to Motown Records they weren't given top priority, as other female vocal groups were attracting audiences and recording hits. While the group awaited their chance at stardom, they recorded backing vocals for more established Motown girl groups, including The Marvelettes, Martha & The Vandellas, and The Supremes. Eventually they broke out with their first single Needle In a HayStack which was then followed up with the groundbreaking He Was Really Saying Something. He Was Really Sayin' Something.

Girlband Classic Legend no.6: The Paper Dolls

Not to be confused with the 90s poptastic British band of the same name, this trio were the first group in pop history to nickname each other and use these titles in promotion and merchandise. The British group recorded a lot of material that got handed to bigger acts like Doris Day and Cilla Black. Their versions of Move Over Darling, Do You Know the Way To San Jose and Step Inside Love reign over the popeatspop covers that are staple songs for the acts concerned. However it is their Any Old Time (You're Lonely And Sad), Baby Take Me In Your Arms and Ain't Nothin' But A House Party gems which makes The Paper Dolls stand out from the rest. It’s a shame history has forgotten them! Any Old Time (You're Lonely And Sad).

Girlband Classic Legend no.7: The Ronettes

The Ronettes consisted of lead singer Veronica Bennett (a.k.a. Ronnie Spector), her sister Estelle Bennett, and their cousin Nedra Talley. Their most famous songs include Be My Baby, Baby I Love You, and Walking in the Rain. However it's Silhouettes which is just amazing and rather groundbreaking. You think it’s a simple pop ballad but check out the amazing operatic backing vocals. Absolutely stunning and you’ll hear nothing like this in your life. Silhouettes

Girlband Classic Legend no.8: The Supremes

Everyone knows about this band. Musicals, films and Oscars. Meh! I think there overrated but you can’t talk about girlgroups without mentioning them. So here we go. One got famous and the others didn’t. Very tragic. The songs were a bit samey. Check out the excellent cover of The Supremes song (Baby Baby) Where Did Our Love Go by the Swedish girlband Bless(Bubbles). Remember when Steps covered Supreme Diana's Chain Reaction and we all quite surprisd because they’d good job? Well, I think Bless(Bubbles) update the song and improve on the original. Judge for yourself: (baby baby) Where did our love go?

Girlband Classic Legend no.9: Sister Sledge

Ok so fastfowarding right to the 70s, Sister Sledge were, like Atomic Kitten, considered over and done with. They were actually about to call it day when their last single We Are Family was released. Now, the song seems entrenched in pop music and culture. You can’t get married without hearing this song. It soothes a break-up, a friendship quarrel and a fight and is ALWAYS played at gay pride events. It has been covered by other girlgroups such as the Spice Girls, The Goldman Girls, Girl Authority, EyeQ and Nobody’s Angel. Their other hits have also shaped modern pop music like He’s The Greatest Dancer which was recently utilised by Will Smith and gave Dannii Minogue another reason to go on holiday following her strenuous performance on Dancing With The Stars. Sister Sledge and disco - it’s the same thing. We Are Family

Girlband Classic Legend no.10: The Shirelles

And back to the 1960s. Its quite natural to end this journey into girlband classic legends with The Shirelles. Why? Because this band were the first girl group to ever go to #1!?!?! Formed in 1958 The Shirelles were the first major female vocal group of the rock era, defining the so-called girl group sound with their soft, sweet harmonies and yearning innocence. They provided some of the earliest hits for important Brill Building songwriters like Gerry Goffin & Carole King, Burt Bacharach & Hal David, and Van McCoy. They also launched the careers of Roberta Flack and Dionne Warwick while exposing American audiences to Beatles songs long before it was fashionable to do so. Who returned the favour by, along with Manfred Mann, swipped songs by The Shirelles and made hits with them for themselves. Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow

FREDRIK KEMPE Disco Volante

Måns Zelmerlöw seems to be pretty much all over blogland these days with his Eurovision attempt Cara Mia. The song itself is just a collage (Finally, Disco Volante and Vincero to be precise) of the the hits released by Fredrik Kempe who also wrote Cara Mia (surprise!). Mister Kempe probably rivals the poor Magnus Carlsson with the number of failed attempts to represent Sweden at Eurovision. It seems with Cara Mia however, Freddie has given up fronting the songs himself and is handing them out to other more bankable acts. As you'll hear on Disco Volante, his operatic lungs and his ability to camp it up are second to none. The strings, the OTT lyrics and the female backing chorus at the end-its like all the musicals of our entire history all rolled into three minutes! Enjoy!

This was the sort of stuff we were all hoping the Charlotte Church would record
.....C'est la vie!
