ANGELLE Walk Tall-A Must Download (Re-upploaded!)

Angelle is a diva. She's an icon of sorts. Probably the best pop product Birmingham has offered the world (yes, Jamelia go home now!). Her videos included a wardrobe of TX Maxx sort and lots of hooped earrings. She had own TV station (called Vibe TV!!!!) to promote her record Joy and Pain that was then replaced by a shopping channel and is now spewing out "material" similar to the wankstation Men And Motors. Excellent!

According to my intrepid pop savior (and Dont Stop The Pop reader) Chris, millions watched the channel which included a concert that culminated in a £3 million campaign for a song that entered no.43 in the charts. She was so unique the Guardian (such closet poptrash lovers don't you think?) did a full page spread on Angelle back in 2002. They stated:

"This [the t.v station] has all come about thanks to entrepreneur and millionaire Steve Bennett ..Steve is now nobbing Angelle....The first programme on the channel is Angelle In Concert, an amazingly slick production in a TV studio with six dancers, a six-piece band, four backing vocalists and more kit changes than Man United. Angelle lip syncs her way through some ballads that are pleasant in a "Sade is a bit dangerous" kind of way....The real weirdness starts with The Making Of Angelle, thankfully not a home video from a night of Brummie passion in 1979........."

Here's a youtube link for her single Joy and Pain. Angelle (real name Sarah Davies) recorded a brilliant pop album that never managed to find itself on the shelves but was released through her website.....

So today its all about the poptastic Walk Tall. It reminds me of Cathy Dennis during her great Guy Chambers days (before he worked with Robbie). It reminds me of the Kinks. It reminds me of William Orbit when he met All Saints (the chorus). It reminds me of Erasure (the backing "ooooohs" at the start). As a pop song its odd as it has a number of genres and a few hooks which oddly works! At first you think its a tribute to the 80's, then it turns to the 70's and then its all 00's. By the end it goes all 90's. It also the has the camptastic lyric "tonight...I'm feelin' tragic". In other words, Walk Tall is a pop gem...

Lovely!

Coming up on DSTP: something very special regarding Robyn.

Round Up (of giggles)

So cute, so fierce

Click here for an amazing/exclusive pic of Chers amazing new album cover. (exclusive to Dstp)

Robyn was amazing. A lot better than Metro apparently. Highlight? Dream On, the acoustic version of Be Mine and forgetting lyrics to Handle Me. Check some pics of the night out here taken by the lovely Lorne Thomson (thanks!).

Look! A Guardian review of Robyn! They give the album 4 out of 5 stars! Winning over traditionally British "austere" journalists, taking London by a storm and releasing material with so little money yet under your name-Robyn you've done yourself proud! Me? I'm proud to be a fan of yours. How many years has it been? Twelve already! OMGrrrl.

I think I'm going the next Popjustice concert. BwO AND The Donaghy! For Five Quid. Justice comes cheap!

I know this is a bit of a self-promotion as I co-run the site but its so exclusive it hurts! Pinkie of YoucallThatLife reviews the new Natalie Imbruglia single and includes hot details about the song that you'll read no where else in the world!

Loving the idea of electroclashing(!?) pop gems! Paul investigates!

Its things like this by ChartRigger that make you want to give up blogging.

Its things like this by PopTrashAddict that makes you want to give up blogging-the sequel.

I fucking love original blogs about music. Like PopmusicWorldWide. Its brilliant.

DOLLY PARTON Baby I'm Burnin'

Dolly needs no introduction. She's currently on her first huge tour in years and it is getting brilliant reviews. Although her stable seems to be country shes dabbled in pop. The result? The infamous Baby I'm Burnin'. It caused earthquakes amongst her fanbase when she released the disco anthem. Fans felt she'd betrayed herself and her the country community as a whole. Only now has she started to bring it back into her shows. Being the popslut that I am, I've always seen it as a forgotten classic but until recently was destined to be lost behind the real Dolly greats like Coat Of Many Colours, I Will Always Love You and Jolene. Its rehabilitation was brought to the fore when the Scissor Sisters used the track as part of its warm-up set of songs before they entered the stage. Its redemption secured its time to celebrate the disco classic that is Baby I'm Burnin'.

ROBYN/Swedish music news

Do ya damn history homework!

DontStopthePop loves Robyn. In fact shes our favourite act (well mine anyway!). We've been petitioning releases from Robyn since early last year so its nice to see her finally break UK. Ok so Robyn (aka "pop princess gone wrong") features in this weeks wonderful podcast from Guardian Unlimited online. This is big. Very big. Only yesterday she was interviewed by the rather poptastically named Dorian Lynskey for British newspaper The Guardian.

She was also played on Jo Whiley's lunchtime show today. Not bad for a girl without any major record company! The Guardian has done a little podcast and they feature all things Sweden. Included is a interview with Robyn who they describe "the Swedish pop sensation who's kind of like a cross between Gwen Stefani, Amy Winehouse and, well, Betty Boo."

More than that, they also speak to The Sounds, review Swedish singles (including The Ark), Swedish music news, talk about Malmo and naturally ABBA. Its such a shame Sounds of Sweden has called it a day as it would seem 2007 is the year of Swedish music as this podcast illustrates. They talk about Max Martin and the influence of Swedish music on the world of pop.

The sounds

To celebrate this, Don'tStopthePop has collected all of its exclusive and rare recent Robyn treats in one single post for your delight. For the moment, you will not find these songs anywhere else-

With Every Heartbeat (acoustic live performance)-This is absolutely stunning. Rumour has it that Kleerup has redone the song for a commercial release come summer time.

Life on Mars Acoustic (unreleased)-Yes, Robyn did this after her second album. Recently unearthed from the archives by a Robyn fan for Robyn fans.....

Bum Like You 07-Bum Like You is amazing song live and was a highlight on Robyn's 2005 4th album. It's so good she decided to return to the song and re-record it. The new version upped her dance groove and has become a fan favourite (once again!). As it will be on the album out next month the quality is low.

Close 2 Konichiwa (unreleased version)-This really should be a b-side for the single. Perhaps it will. Thats why its of low quality. Still, a treat nevertheless...

PS: did they get their news about Melodifestivalen from YouCallThatLife?

SCOOCH REACT TO THE HATERS Y'ALL!

It seems only days since ChartRigger revealed the highly charged storm brewing out of the Scooch performance of Making Your Mind Up. Well, they've responded in the only way they now how to-by donning their horrific uniforms and sucking hard (for landing of course!). Yes, they are now performing live and changing the lyrics just to prove it. They also did the song on tonights Graham Norton Show and recieved a huge applause. There is a something in my bones that is telling me this song could be huge. Just one bone. Not telling which one though.

HEPBURN Cold World

Its freezing today isn't it! Warm yourselves up with this brilliant rare track by girlband Hepburn. Many might remember the girls for the guitar slicks but as you'll hear on Cold World they dabbled in hard core dance now and then. This even has that vocoder effect that was all the rage during the late 90's. Hepburn generally did tedious rock anthems like I Quit and Bugs but Cold World redeems the girls in our books. Don't read "Hepburn" and move on, Cold World is truly poptastic!

So details details! Cold World appeared as a b-side to the Australian release of I Quit (the UK b-sides were Sleeping Beauty and Butterfly). It then appeared on a Smash Hits giveaway CD when they use to throw-in collections of new bands rather than pocket mirrors, lipsticks and shit like that. You can hear more Hepburn material plus others at this little dedicated e-library!

The first girlband legends post is on its way-in the meantime get your tuesday trance two-sets on and blast out Cold World! You'll love it!

BETTY BOO I'm On My Way!

Ugly Betty-I think not!

Hey, its about time this girl was featured on DSTP! Why? Shes so innovative (she paved the way for Robyn and Gwen), she was previously in a girlband and grrr shes...betty boo!!

Betty Boo's second album was a lot better than her more successful first release. It acts like a template for every Spice Girls+Girls Aloud album since its release back in 1992. Over ten years later it still contains some of the most fresh yet classic pop songs ever to come out of the UK. And so they really need airing now and then. The lead off single from Grrr, 'Let Me Take you There' is one of the best summer songs ever written.

Alas, I won't bore you with her CV, her highs and lows. Everyone knows about the incident in Australia, the Pure and Simple writing credit and so forth. Instead, go now to amazon and check out her second album before copies run out!!

THE SUNDAY FABULOUSNESS

Robyn features in Gay Times this month. It marks her first appearance within the glossy pages of a major British publication. Radio 1 is also starting to play her new single...

Scooch has shocked everyone by winning Making Your Mind Up. I didn't watch it. I was drunk celebrating with my Irish relatives. The world went green even in the BBC studios...

Kylie had dinner with the future Prime Minister of Britain on friday night. The album is described dance, dirty, blue and disco...

Fans on Madonna might be dissapointed. Her new album will be 100% rnb. Shes confirmed her hook up with Swizz Beatz. Bring on the battyriders, rentarappers and an remix from P.Diddy...

If you go here you can read about the new single and album news about BwO!

Mike of Poptrash has informed me that Dannii's new single is doing really well on radio play. In Australia...

Clea have recorded three brilliant songs and will "relaunch" in May 2007...

I went to see Dame Maggie Smith the other night. She was fab. Also saw The Entertainer at the Old Vic. That too was fab!

The charts of Sweden gets rammed with Melodifestivalen singles
...

The Observer Music Monthly comes out today. It isnt as good as it used to be is it....

Mary Cherry is about to post the first of the Girlband legends bands.........

Two momentus events...

From next week, DSTP will finally finsih off our Girlbands obsession with the Legends of Girlbands posts starting. The first one will time with the return of the greatest made-for-TV act in history.... Germany's No Angels who release their first single in four years on Monday. So for your listening pleasure, here's a trash remix of new single Goodbye To Yesterday.

And in even more exciting news, Germany's answer to JLo/Whoriah Carey, Sarah Connor, releases a new album called Soulicious at the end of the month, featuring covers of classic soul songs! Sarah may do trashy faux R'n"B pop well, but she also has a beautiful voice and this album really shows it. Here's the title track.

Sweden may do pop best, but Germany is a close second!

ROBYN Close 2 Konichiwa! "EXCLUSIVE NEW ROBYN TRACK!" [Preview]

"Squash ya like tomatoes!"

This is a bootleg re-recording of her new single with new lyrics and so forth. We do hope you like this! Its a bit of an exclusive but wouldnt be here if it wasnt for a stunning singer who "brought" it to my attention (thanks darling!). Check out that sample! Check out the new completely new chorus! Check out the total new lyrics at the end...

NOTE: THIS IS A TRACK IS PRESENTED HERE ONLY TO PREVIEW IT!! The version you're gonna hear is a sneak peek
to the song and nothing more. The version here today is a treat and nothing more so much so the quality has been reduced. Your speakers are not broken. The drips and dips in sound are there on purpose. You won't have these cuts if you buy the cd when its out. Nevertheless enjoy the preview!

FREDRIK KEMPE Disco Volante

Måns Zelmerlöw seems to be pretty much all over blogland these days with his Eurovision attempt Cara Mia. The song itself is just a collage (Finally, Disco Volante and Vincero to be precise) of the the hits released by Fredrik Kempe who also wrote Cara Mia (surprise!). Mister Kempe probably rivals the poor Magnus Carlsson with the number of failed attempts to represent Sweden at Eurovision. It seems with Cara Mia however, Freddie has given up fronting the songs himself and is handing them out to other more bankable acts. As you'll hear on Disco Volante, his operatic lungs and his ability to camp it up are second to none. The strings, the OTT lyrics and the female backing chorus at the end-its like all the musicals of our entire history all rolled into three minutes! Enjoy!

This was the sort of stuff we were all hoping the Charlotte Church would record
.....C'est la vie!

LYNSEY SHAW OF ELECTRIC DOLLS SPEAKS TO DONSTOPTHEPOP

The Electric Dolls!

Seeing as Dontstopthepop loves girl bands it seemed natural to actually speak to a member of not just one poptastic girl-group but two! The Pop Princess Lynsey Shaw once belonged to the Stock/Aitken cult pop band Girls@Play (she was the cop) and now finds herself in the envious position of being a member the uberglam band The Electric Dolls. Although they've just begun their probably epic journey through Planet Pop! the Electric Dolls are already creating waves (groan!) within the music industry and beyond. They were girlband no.126 in our girlband essay and as you'll read below "legend status" is pretty much theirs before even a single is out...

Lynsey flaps her fans

DontstopthePop: Darling, you’re a pop legend! More than that, a Girlband legend-unlike many girlband members you’ve been in two. Two! Why, sweetie, why?

Linsey: Because I love my gals! I guess the time I had in G@P left me scarred for life and forever wanting to recreate the happy tour van of screaming women! Well kind of!? To be honest the visual impact of a gang of girls is very powerful and I like the concept & visuals that come with Electric Dolls. Maybe I just have a girlie dressing up fetish...??? It has been said before!

As a 14 year-old girl Loughborough lass what were you dancing to on your walkman when you should have been doing your history homework?

Do u know I have a very vivid memory of being at the bus stop on my way home from school at around 12 or so listening to a tape i'd made up of Elvis songs from my Dad's very large record collection. I think I still have it somewhere! I had a HUGE thing for Elvis, still do! (I was such a geek). By the time I'd blossomed & hit 14 it was Madonna all the way! Like A Prayer album probably!

I’ve always dreamt that the Girls@Play ‘shelved’ album somehow went missing Vicky Pollard style and found itself online. Tracks like Brand New Car and When Love Takes Over You sound rather enticing! Care to flare?

Well u remember more than me! When Love Takes Over You... god I'm not sure I can even hmmm it now! Brand New Car... well now there was a knee busting dance routine if ever I saw one! I remember feeling very proud of the fact that I got to wear knee pads for that... just like one of my heroes Janet Jackson. I believe I really was a part of the Rhythm Nation! "If you had a brand new car... u wouldn't get far with me!" Well you'll have to call up Mike & Matt and see if they can be persuaded to put all the old tracks together and get the album out there.... finally! Otherwise, check out myspace. I'll see if I can get Brand New Car up there soon! ;-)

Are you aware that Girls@Play have a huge cult following?

Girls@Play: LoveThis Babes

Well I have an inkling in that every now & then I'll get a text or a call from a friend in a club somewhere who's listening to us being played or they have the video on a big screen, we're talking mainly gay clubs here! I also was quite chuffed to see that one of the comments on youtube about Airhead was from a fan in New Zealand who loved G@P... couldn't believe they'd heard of us in that hemisphere!!

What did you do with your baton?

Oh... I still have it! As I always used to say... "Every mark on it (still) tells a story"! I have all my cop outfits and hardware!!!! Apart from a pair of handcuffs that got confiscated in Barcelona airport! Now you try telling airport security you're in a girlband, and that's why you're carrying handcuffs and a night stick, with only pictures and hand gestures! That WAS funny!

Is Thursday pink or purple?

Purple... Wednesday's pink.

What are Electric Dolls about and why they stand out from other girlbands?

Well... check out the look for a start... I think we stand out! Hopefully visually & musically. We're Barbarella, meets stepford wives, meets Gwen Stefani, meets Madonna, meets Spice Girls, meets Prince... now there's a great dinner party guest list! Or as we say on the myspace site we're bit of Gwen, a bit of Prince, a bit of Madge & a bit of chintz! And to go with the image & quirky style, lyrics & music in a quirky style! Ta-dah!

The straight boys at my local comprehensive often talked about baps. Often after football in the showers. I thought they were praising the qualities of the canteen sandwiches. I’m thinking Baps R Baking is also about sandwiches. Am I wrong?

Yes it's about fluffy fresh bread baking in the oven. Mmmmm don't you just love the smell of baking bread? Not a smell you'd usually equate with dancing in a club, granted, but then who wants usual? I am, after all, a great cook and it seems the boys at your school obviously appreciated good baps when they saw them!

Would you be the bread or the ham?

Oooh the ham in a Sawyer (from Lost) & Michael (from Prison Bake... I mean Break) sandwich!

There is something really Gilbert & George about Electric Dolls. Its like if you were artists you’d be in Tate Modern before you can say Tracey Emin. Why’d ya think that is?

Oooh I like that! I was thinking more Pierre et Gilles but I like Gilbert & George too! Maybe it's because when i dream it's not only in colour but in Pop Art too!? Also my parents influence (both trained artists) and my art & fashion college background!? What do YOU think??

Who is more respectable? Girls@Play or Electric Dolls?

"We ain't never gonna be respectable!" Period! (Or have any respectable periods).

When is the Electric Dolls album due?

Well we need to get the material together first. It's all hectic in the studio at the minute! I'm in tomorrow and was there today. We're working hard, writing new songs all the time in the Baps style! New tunes include a track called Supercute & another called Love Me Long Time all coming to a myspace near you very soon! But when we're ready we'll get our toned Dolly asses to a record campany & thrash out a deal...(yes A&R people form an orderly queue).

Electric Rabbit or Electric toothbrush?

Erm do you mean the energiser bunny? I'm not sure what you mean? Well you'd have a job cleaning your teeth with the rabbit but you could probably improvise with the toothbrush... but erm lets just say they each have their time, place and value.

Dannii or Kylie?

Kylie Kylie Kylie!

Barbie or the Britney Spears doll?

Does the Britney Doll come with a shaved head, portable re-hab clinic, a trailer & 2 disposable babies???? Britney Doll for sure... with changable wigs & cigarette holder!

Should a song that asks whether Europe wants “some salted nuts” really represent Britain at Eurovision? (I’m talking of Flying the Flag by Scooch)

Hmmmm good question! I mean it worked for Chef from South Park didn't it? Although the items in that song were chocolate balls... I have to say that if we can even consider Jordan, pregnant, in pink rubber, it really does throw the doors wide open doesn't it!? I say good luck to them! I think that's all a girl in a band who wrote a song called Baps R Baking can say!

And lastly, Can’t Get You Out Of My Head or Outta My Head?

Aaaaaah that's too hard! I have to go with Outta My Head... it has too many lovely memories attached to it for me to deny!

I'd like to thank Lynsey, Electric Dolls and Mac for the photos!

MONROSE GET REJECTED & GERMANY SENDS FRANK

Sending a subpar Frank Sinatra to Eurovision doesn't really wash with me. In fact it stinks! Perhaps one is pissed Monrose were rebuffed but even I, girlband superfan, realise Even Heaven Cries was a dud track. They so should have gone with 2 of a Kind. I can just see the Helsinki performance-three diva's strutting down the stage, singing about 'different kinda people' and all to rather very-now electro-slash-rnb disco beat. Yes, some might critique its closeness to ManEater/SexyBack but I don't really think thats a bad thing! Oh and its was written by Gary Barlow!

The above video of Monrose performing 2 of A Kind at the Dome has everything a 21st century Eurovision really should do-electropop, windmachines, limp wrists as essential elements of the choreography and the world peace lyric of "we're all in this together".......oh and did I mention it was written by Gary Barlow?

Lene Alexandra Øien My Boobs Are Okay

"I keep my religion in a Gucci purse/Oh my god I forgot the rest of this verse"

What do you do if you mashed up Victoria Silverstedt, Dannii Minogue, Gwen Stefani, Pay-TV and Margaret Berger? The Norwegan poptrash princess Lene Alexandra Øien! In "My Boobs Are Okay" Lene deconstructs, seduces and satirizes to such a hyper-extremity I am rather breathless. The video is just as sublime as the song....

BOYS TOWN GANG Cruising The Streets-12" Mix (perhaps NSFW)

"I swear even cowboys like to strut too"

When Steps and Scooch were merely atoms of a gay tomorrow Boys Town Gang were the pop group that lovers of disco trash lapped up pornowhore-style. The glorious site Discog states that despite the death of disco some months beforehand "clubgoers, especially the gay ones, hadn't stopped dancing, it was just that the high energy music of 1978 and 1979 wasn't being produced or released by late 1980 early 1981." Immediately they took off....sort of!

The stars of show were Cynthia Manley and Jackson Moore but as you'll hear on Cruisin' The Streets the music itself was just as epic. With odes dedicated to gay cities and bum sex between men you can sort of understand why Boys Town Gang were rebuffed. That didnt matter to the group however and in true subversive meriment they made sure their 12" versions were so pornographic the listener couldn't help but laugh. For example they finish up Cruisin' The Streets with "stuff that sausage in me" like it was a dance step ala Macarena or the Boogaloo. Absolutely trashtastic!

When queer theorists, NME journalists and cultural voxpops herald the groundbreaking hardcore gay antics of the crap Frankie Goes To Hollywood it would be wise say "meh" and pour a glass of champers for BoysTown Gang: the forgotten and fabulously filthy pop band of the early early 1980's.

P-O-P!-ITS THE DONTSTOPTHEPOP THEME TUNE

Poplovers, forget the lame Kylie tracks that are leaking everywhere! DontStopthePop has finally got its theme tune sorted. Its called P-O-P and the chorus is includes the line "gonna be the hit one, forget the shit ones".

Its by a girlband that came about because of the PopStars show. They sing in English but it is not their first language, they are from a country that speaks German and they've scored a number of hits in the charts. And, it is not The Preluders (know who it is yet?). If you like it tell me and the full version will be with you very soon!

You can check it out on DontStopthePops myspace or simply clicking the link here and above.

Coming up on DSTP: more Robyn? more gossip? more girlbands!

KYLIE-LESSONS [KylieX] tracklisting [?]-meh!

Kylie album news-We've spoken to writers (think Danish!!) involved with the album and shes still recording it so the tracklisting that's currently going through the internet...is FAKE.

THE BRITISH EUROVISION ENTRANTS IN FULL!

The site says that these tracks should be available to 12:00 GMT (13:00 CET) on March 17th. Its the 3rd. So be quick-I don't think they shoulda been put online so early. Thanks to a little pinkiedust I've had the scooch track for sometime but now I hear the others I think the fab4 are actually the best of the bunch. So without any hesitation or delay, I am about to saysomething you'd never expect to hear in an sentence-Scooch are the best of the bunch!!!!!1111!!

Be quick as they might not be there for lon

FOR THE BOYS OF MARDI GRA-ITS THE DIVA MONICA/PIC OF KYLIE RECORDING NEW ALBUM

This video has everything-1920s Hollywood glamour, crazy eyes, diva struts, boys kissing each other, an eagle, Madonna look-a-likes and men with feather boas. Those vocals and Those eyes.
Monica shows bitches like Cher, Kylie, Madonna, Dannii and Anna Vissi how to do Ultimate Gay Icon and plows their existence into the next century.

Talking of which, Pop Queen Kylie is seen below recording her new album with Calvin Harris! The album is said to be pretty much complete which is great news. Sadly only one Calvin track was done as other producers have already submitted their songs...

In other news, Stacie Orrico has informed her fans today thats she's moving to Africa. She stated in an email sent out this week that "I am moving to Africa for a few months to work in the townships with Children infected with Aids. Statistics say that 50% of the children under the age of 15 will die in the next 10 years from this ghastly disease, and I am ready to go help fight the fight first hand." I heart this girl. Her albums have always been criminally underrated and her luck with record companies quite pitiful...still, strength to you girl!

Oh and DontStopthePop has finally got itself a myspace and Last.fm! Have a great weekend!

THE LEGENDS OF GIRLBANDS COMING VERY SOON!

Not all the bands are featured in the image above but its a good indication of whats coming up...

P.S.: Thanks to Roberto for the lovely collage! :)

Kylie returns to H&M

The new Kylie/H&M campaign

Long before Madonna raped Into The Groove for H&M, a label-less Kylie touted her body for the clothing company with great success. Of course, Robyn did it first but thats beside the point. This summer Kylie will return to H&M with new "beach-bum/glamour" collections. The theme is simply called "Australia" and in a joust of typical media intelligence the company called Queen Kylie to front the entire affair. Personally I would have gone with her more famous sister but rumour has it Dannii was on holiday when the call came through so she couldn't do it.

The 'H&M loves Kylie' line is part of H&M’s main swimwear range and contains fifteen styles which will be in all H&M stores that sell womenswear in mid May......Just as long Kylie doesn't do a rap remix of Better The Devil You Know with Missy Eliot DSTP is fully behind it!

DANNIIS BOX EXPLODES!!!

This picture found itself on the now legendary popblog PopTrash. It bolted out at me like Edvard Munch's Scream. It made me wet. It made me cry. It made me want to swim to Australia and lick Mr.Poptrash all over. Then I decided it might be quicker to fly there. I was on Qantas.cum when suddenly the above image of Dannii straddled my thalamus and I've been speaking in tongues since. Which is why Qantas refused me to fly me. However don't refuse Poptrash and pay your respects to the god now. The above image might have actually occurred if Dannii handn't agreed to be the first victim of the Kylie curse.....

In other news...read about Pinkie's odd dream here. Watch Masters at Work dance to Slippydiscos strange pussies. Or, get really jealous over the new Zapping.
