JONAH The World Exclusive Interview (as his single enters the Swedish top ten!)

TheWorldofJonah
Forget ya Dannys, Justins, Willys, Olas, Darrens, and Mans-lets get down to business here. We're talking pop business. Real, deep and hard. Thats how DontStopthePop likes its pop singers. Mean, gritty and a Gucci bag full of love, laughter and giggles. The high pitched popBoys in this popworld come and go but rarely do they seem to please the towers of DontStopthePop. In short DSTP has grown tired of boy pop princes. They appear to be nothing more than pretenders to the throne as one Henry Tudor might say. I desire something bold, honest, kingly and commanding. Yes-I want a singer with balls. Pop balls if you wish!

So step forward Jonah. The man is a legend to be true but what follows below is bewildering. DSTP has already featured him and it was so successful an interview seemed only natural. So two days ago an interview was done and today to DSTP's absolute joy Jonah's song Summer High has moved from no.14 in Sweden and has landed deep in the top ten of the Swedish charts.

As they say in Sweden "Veckans Smash Hit!"

Quite amazing! Oh yes, heads are certainly turning and very quickly too! This is a man who has sung and lived the words of I am What I am, danced with British rentboys, taught the lyrics of Eurovision failures to Saudi royalty and could literally teach a thing or two to our British pop male acts.......so on with the questions!

----------------------

First of all, let me say that you’ve had a great response after appearing on DontStopthePop a few days ago! Why’d ya think that is?

Because you British guys has such an excellent taste of course (laughs). To be honest I was really surprised when I discovered your site, the article and all the positive comments. Its very flattering!

One of our readers and one of your fans, Peter Lassing of Karlstad to be exact, responded by saying that you’d started in doing music years ago. He added “He was 12 or 13 something and already shining like a star. It was something very special about his appearance on stage.” What was the show and what do you remember from that time in your life?

Wow, what a compliment……..Oh god, what show was that?! Hmmm i can’t really remember what show it was but what I do remember is that in that exactly period I was really getting determined that I wanted to become a singer. I did shows and started to sing and dance more seriously and also had my first roles.

Well, I for one never knew you’d started doing music so young! What was your favourite production?

That i was in or that I looked at?!

Both!

My favourite musical I always wanted to watch was Fame. I had such a hard time to decide whether I wanted to be Nic who was this fabulous singer, soft and humble or Tyrone who was this cool guy and a greeeeeaaaat dancer. Its still my problem .... to be the humble, soft homestayer or that cool groovy partyguy! Hahahahahahaaha!!!!!

My favorite musical to be in was a stage-version of Bröderna Lejonhjärta by the Swedish favourite writer Astrid Lindgren. It’s such a heartbreaking story and is about two brothers. Bobby go and read it if you haven’t!

Will do! Now a lot of the replies ran with one major theme-that your a pop artist with a sense of dignity. How would you reply to that?

It’s really important to me to always stay true to myself and my heart... I hope it may shine through. For example I been asked to participate in the Swedish version of American Idol for two seasons and both times I’ve turned it down. That’s not my way of making music. I love the show but I wouldn’t like to be in it. For me music starts in the heart. Not in others expectations. That goes not only for music by the way! That’s also how i want to live my life. To get that no 1 hit or to get a worldwide breakthrough isn’t the most important thing you know...

So, straight to your music! Who are you working with on this album?

I’ve chosen a lot of different writers and producers for the album. All extremely creative and with a lot of experience. We also had a lot of songs send to us from other countries and some of them may be on the album. Your disco-icon and one of my old favorites Rick Astley wrote one of the songs I listened to earlier today hehe... Maybe I’ll add it. He was sooo cool at the height of his career. A keyperson in the whole affair is my 1st hand producer Anders Lundstöm. He is almost as much of the Jonah-music-style as myself. I love working with him!

Will the sound of the album mirror your first two singles or Summer High?

It’s more Summer High. Absolutely! But I’ll promise you; there will also be dance remixes (winks).

Theres a lot of love for Summer High! Will the album explore all the seasons of the year?

Of course... I love to give energy and make people dance and be happy.... but right now it’s alot of ballads in the making... those heartbroken ones... a typical autumn-phenomena... Songs for spring will also be easy... but winter??? Uhhh i hate the winter!

Ok, I’ve been lucky enough to hear some of your new sounds and its great. Although demos they all have that distinct quality based around your voice and sublime 1960’s pop molded into a 2008 disco hype. The decision to go with the Summer High direction will please many including myself. What are the songs your most proud about at the moment?

Hmm--- There is a song called "Walk with me" that i wrote myself that is very close to my heart at the minute. “Will you still love me in the afternoon” is also one of my favorites. It really puts my life together in a song hehehehehe...

Whats it about?

It’s about the feelings you have when you wake up to late for breakfast a sunday at noon.
But above all... I love "Look at me now". That’s a special song for me. Also a ballad as the other two. I hope it will be chosen as the next single. And "Play (If you)" is also fab... sexy dirty and very me. (Oh and Jonah winks again!).

Can you describe what you wanna do with your first album? And want you want to it sound like?

I want it to be a picture of me. Different sides of my person... You should be able to find songs suitable for every occasion: Like bringing me as your friend into different parts of your life. Suitable to dance to at the party, cuddle up with in the sofa those heartbroken nights with ben & jerry ice-cream and just the tv as comes on or to become the soundtrack of your wildest moments in bed...

Ahem. Perhaps a title then? What about “Jonah’s Arc”? Have you got to that stage yet? Of giving it a name?

Hehehe great title... but unfortunately I’ve already named it... "Welcome to my world”

If your sound as an musician had to be plucked out in just 5 key words I’d go with “groovy”, “pop”, “uplifting”, “Quirky” and of course “stylistic”. Would you agree with those & would you add any to those?

I think you say it really good there. Honesty is another word I’d like to use. As well as personal.

What three things since the release of your first single "I am What I am", are you most proud of?

Thats a though one. I’m proud of walking my own way. Instead of doing what everybody expected and to put all my life into becoming a popstar back then in 2001. When i was just 20 something i wanted to wait until the time was right. Now is that time. I’m older...But what the fuck who cares? Uhh 3 things.. that means 2 more... hmm need to think about that one...

Ok, I know your disco friends with fellow DontStopthePop favourites, Miss Match! Would you three ever consider teaming up to create a perfect slice of pop music? Perhaps special guests for your album?

Hehe... We’ve talked about it since we first hooked up when we were on the same tour around Melodifestivalen 2007... especially when we go out to a party we always end up talking about how fab it would be hehe... I love those girls! But now since Alcazar has re-united we had to make a promise to not do anything togheter for awhile... We don’t want the disco divas in Alcazar to be forgotten in the shadows hahahahaha!!!!

Now on Neon Nights, Dannii Minogue wrote and dedicated a song to her vibrator/dildo. The song was called Vibe On and despite never ever being released it’s a bit of a favourite. What aspects of your life are influencing the subjects that you find yourself writing about and putting to music?

Everything. Totally!

September
, Miss Match, Lucky Twice, Robyn, B-Tween, Danny, Magnus Carlsson, BwO….you can see where this is going.... Two questions. The first why is the Swedish pop scene so damn good? And secondly, where do you see your music and your style fit into that batch of singers?

First of all i do NOT agree with you.. I think some of these Swedish acts are really boring to be honest... But some of them are really super! Since ABBA we also had some strange self-confidence that we are a good music country... I think that helps... there are so many talented producers, writers and artists in Sweden... And somehow we all seem to get to be able to make magic... that’s the good part of being a small country. Hmmmm where do i find my music... well... thats a tough one though.

Out of all of those acts mentioned…which one would you
1) Go Camping with… 2) Go Partying with… 3) Collaborate on a Kylie tribute album…

Ok well I probably would say Miss Match on all three... but to make it more fun I’ll add some more!

i) love to go camping with Robyn (I’d love to have her for myself a couple of days!)
ii) go partying with September (she reaaaaaly knows how to party).
iii) To collaborate on a Kylie tribute album? That would have to be with Magnus (could it be more camp?)
iv) and go to bed with? BwO!

(I didn’t add part iv that was completely from the mind of Jonah!)

Can you tell the readers about the time you burnt the hotel down with the drag queen hostess Miss Matulda?

Once at a show in northern Sweden I was feeling sick, so I returned to my hotel room for some tea and lit a bunch of candles. Then I figured that wine would be a better cure, opened a bottle and then remembered that my friend, the drag queen hostess Miss Matulda, was in the room down the hallway. I went over with a glass for her as well. She was just in the middle of putting on her make up, so I went back to my room after ten seconds. When I opened my room door, I saw that the candles had set the whole curtain on fire. In shock, I figured the right thing to do was to immediately and take control of the situation for everyone’s best……..

So I managed to grab a hold of my Dolce & Gabbana’s and my designer stage clothes before the firemen pulled me out of the room. As the last to leave the building, I was standing face to face with about 50 firemen and police officers, but luckily for my guilty ass, no one was looking at me. Instead, all eyes were on the transvestite only wearing fishnet stockings, heavy eye-brows and a bare upper body.

Talking of burning down the house…Did you think Scooch deserved to do better at Eurovision?

I loved Scooch! Me and my best friend – a winner of Eurovision a few years ago - were watching it via satellite in Spain... I did the scooch-dance for the entire month in Puerto Banus And I even tried to teach a particular SchejkPrince from Arabia the lyrics. He loved the "coffee tea" part haha….

Are you yourself toying with the idea of entering the competition?

We are working on an entry for the Swedish competition. BUT my dream is to enter for England... yes you may think that seems strange but i have my reasons. And let’s face it... You could do with some Swedish help!

You’ve worked with Schlager legend Shirley Clamp. Would you ever consider releasing a schlager album (or perhaps just a bonus track?). I know its miles away from your current sound but I’ve always thought your deep vocals and a boy singing Linda Bengtzing’s “Alla Flickor” would be rather polemic! And an English version too?! I think we'd all love a male version of that Swedish classic!

Haha... I’ll perform it as a bonus on my first G A Y show... I promise you.

Am I right in thinking you taught arts at several universities in 2005?

Not arts... but performing arts... Well since 2000 really... mostly in sweden but also around Europe...

As it’s the title of your new single, what memory do you recall as a summer high? What made it so good? Was it “erotical” or “tragical” (or both!).

On my first visit ever to an English gay bar, my friends and I ended up having a bet about who would get the cute David Beckham-look-a-like that was strutting around looking delicious. I won, which was fun, but not as fun any more when I asked him what he did for a living and it turned out he was a prostitute! How did the night end? Well I didn’t have to pay!

---

So there you have it-Jonah Hedqvist: A Pop Legend!! He's obviously the most exciting male acts to step up to the microphone since, like whenever. He’s taught performing arts around the globe some of which included teaching Arabian royalty the naughty lyrics and dance steps to Scooch’s Flying The Flag. His album sounds poptastic and DontStopthePop has already pre-ordered five thousand copies to give to loved ones come Christmas time. What strikes me reading the interview back is how utterly distinct, mature & frank Mr.Jonah is and in a time when male pop acts seem guarded, manufactured and believe screeching is singing Jonah is one of a kind. Jonah is the perfect DontStopthePop popstar & we all await his next move with baited breath!

ROBYN Konichiwa No.1 The amazing celebration Megamix

You'll hear this no where else. Very bootleg, very Robyn, very rare and a bit amazing! Ok so rewind! This needs some explanation and as they say everything needs context. Nearly two years ago Robyn had yet to release her fourth album but a small number of fans kept the spirit alive by endlessly wondering about the chances of her comeback. This was before Be Mine ever appeared on Swedish radio. All we had were her first three albums usually sent through the magic of import & of course laughing at Beverley Knights tragic cover of Robyn's Keep This Fire Burning. Back then the fans were few and my memory is a bit sketchy. What was a concurrent theme throughout most of our discussions during that time-frame was the fact that we always had to introduce the name Robyn and how amazing she was to an audience who generally shrugged their shoulders in bewilderment. But we'd always try our best to plug the Swedish singer: Lena created one of the best Robyn fansites, Mandy helped her out while also launching a music career of her own, Ola started remixing and archived a lot of her lost classics and I set up DontStopthePop clearly named after Robyn's 3rd album Don't Stop The Music. The little team of Robyn fans did our best to promote the singer whenever we could and todays post is something of a manifestation of our shock and "yayness" of Robyn's huge success outside Sweden this year.

Last summer, Dont Stop The Pop featured a rough version of With Every Heartbeat. Come 2007 it was no.1, released throughout Europe and the next single Handle Me is already C-listed by BBC's Radio One with Be Mine looming large in the background. Our jaws are still waiting to be scrapped from the floor. As Robyn is about to tour the US shes also the darling of blogland and media sites like PopJustice. All of this is amazing and for a girl on her own label we thought it was time to take stock and celebrate Robyn's successes.

How could we do that? As old old old fans of Robyn we thought rather than posting about her chart success it would be logical to turn the attention to the person responsible for it-Robyn! So Ola (aka DJ Mad Wrist) created an amazing megamix of ten minutes of pure Robyn bliss including material from the recent LP and then some. But this is no usual megamix. It includes mash-ups, snippets from lost gems, remixes and echoes of a musical a Robyn hinterland that is accessible for both newcomer and old-Robyn fan!

Of course this is one for the Robyn fans but its created by the super fan Robyn DJ Md Wrist so he knows his stuff and treats the subject with care and love! Its pretty amazing considering DJ Md Wrist teaches kids in Stockholm (What a cool teacher-he's a DJ!). Lena of Robynfan.com created the amazing CD sleeve you see above and myself and Mandy helped where we could!

Its friday so get ready to do the RobynRaka and celebrate the comeback of millennium!

BOTTOMS UP EVERYONE!

This month saw the release of Keke Palmers album "So Uncool" in the US and its brilliant.
Mainly cos it includes one of the finest pop songs of the year which also happens to be one of the perkiest song-titles that DontStopthePop has come by in recent months. As you'll hear Keke demands her audience to get their bottoms up and recalls Shakira's forewarning that hips don't lie while ordering us to "bob our heads". Clearly, she wants us to play some kind of game of contortion. I mean at one time we're supposed to have our bottoms up in the air. Tick-done that! Then we gotta bob our heads too! Simultaneously?! Is it possible to be bobbing ones head at the same time protrude our rears in the air? I don't think this is possible-but if you've ever been in such a position please inform me and I'll readily take down notes.

Beside the utterly gymnastic temperance of the song, Bottoms Up is clearly listenable and thus deserves a mention on DontStopthePop. Keke, who comes from the darling world of acting, welcome to pop!

LINNEA HANDBERG Made Up My Mind (Legal Download!)

A must pop album for any pop lover (this is the Japanese hit release of the cd)

Music Download (legal) : Made Up My Mind

Linnea Handberg. Linnea Handberg. Where tho art theeeee begin!?! Real name Linnéa Handberg Lund, Ms.Linnea is pop princess who hails from Denmark and most might know her stage name of Miss.Papaya under which she released her first album simply titled Pink back in 1998. However I want to focus on her second album released two years later and called This Is Who I Am. The album is the sort of CD that the likes of Solid Harmonie, Britney and Precious would have loved to have released. You know the songs I'll Be There For You and Hit Me Baby One More Time? Well imagine an entire CD full of songs of that pop notch quality. Today, Linnea herself has very kindly allowed readers of DontStopthePop to download one of those songs but this is not a case of me picking the best song and the rest of the album are all duds. On the contrary, the collection consists of one of the finest batch of pop songs of 2000. Despite major record company interest, including Maverick, things didnt appear to happen but I highly recommend you track down the album. Its not just a forgotten classic but each song has monumentally poptastic.

This is isnt me going over the top or anything. I declare such claims as I have the backing of other groups who evidently heard the brilliance of the album and grabbed tracks for their albums. Take the title track for example. It was covered and released by the French girlband L5 (who retitled it for their audiences as "Aime"). Following suit, the Swedish girlband, Excellence, covered the Danish act with their take on Linneas "I Believe It When I See It". Going to warmer climates Spains Chenoa covered Linnea's "Why You Doin' It Like That" and god knows about the rest but I highly suspect nearly all of her songs have gone to other acts. Indeed, recent material Jon of Denmark, Tik Tak of Finland and the Chipz albums all feature the song-writing credits of Linnea Handberg. Therefore, it would be only polite to raise a glass of cherry wine to one of Denmarks finest female song-writers (and as a thank you for allowing us to share one of her brilliant songs!).

Come 2007, she now spends her time appearing on one-off dance special releases but really dedicates her love & talent to song-writing. In 2004, she signed to EMI Music Publishing & from then on has seen her name on most album sleeves for pop acts around the world including the theme to Big Brother, working with DJ's and re-settling in London where she says most of the work is these days.

Thank you Linnea!

ROBYN HANDLE ME The Exclusive review!

So it begins! Robyn is slowly making waves in Australia, Japan and of course the big US of A but her 3rd single is getting ready for release back in the country that gave her a no.1 in the summer-the UK! That single is sublime ditty Handle Me which will bring out the post-feminist in all of us. Girlpower? No, Handle Me is more than that! Its a declaration of freedom, beyond freedom and totality. If you've got the album already you don't need any introduction to Handle Me. Its already been released in Sweden but luckily for us we're getting our own very special re-release with new mixes and a brand new video. Today I am gonna discuss the brilliant new mixes. The first is the "Bjorn Remix". Coming in at 2:59 seconds, it takes Robyn to a brand new level. The track is transformed into a sublime rock anthem and the dirty yet sublime rnb beats of the original are slowly lost with amazing results. As mixes go, this version is like a completely different song but don't worry its not a dub-all the vocals remain intact! Its a vocal remix and it really works. Robyn is made into some dirty rock chick of the 1970's and screaming slogans of fierce liberation. She's there at the civil rights movement and Stonewall protests in NYC. Gone is censorship! Indeed, the "Nazi" is no longer twisted back and Robyn hurls the insult in its natural form.

The second mix is called the "Williams Vox" and if you like your house mixes this ones for you. Its completely different from the rocky desires of the Bjorn Remix. Again, all the vocals remain intact including the "Nazi" line which is allowed to come from the lips of the singer without any studio mastery. The "Williams Vox" is a dirty deep blue house mix. Sparse, electro and will have the clubs smiling. The added synths make it ever so epic. The 3rd mix is a dub of the Williams Vox mix.

The fourth mix is wonderfully called the "Ortzroka Death To Disco Remix" and this is utterly amazing. All the mixes are stunning but under the auspices of Ortzroka, Handle Me evolves into an beautiful electro lush power anthem that sounds a bit like a Fisherspooner showstopper combined with something the Dragonette, UnkleJam and Xenomania might produce if they put their powers together. In other words, remember that Fisherspooner mix of Kylie's Come Into My World? Well thats the nearest thing I can describe and compare this mix to. In short-its good, very good! Next to sublime. On this mix you'll also hear a sense vulnerability that you might not realise is present in the first - album - version of the song. The bravado of the original is somehow lost in the pulsating beats and you sense tears are about to fall from Robyn's cheeks. The kids of OrtzRoka have put the song up on their myspace which you can listen here. Now the song is an electro anthem on the level of With Every Heartbeat and Dream On. Its previous rock/rnb dresses are flung to floor and now occupies a space that is Other. Indeed, the "beyond" now owns Handle Me. Its that good!

Conclusion: The remixes are fantastic. Each one completely different and never uniform or monochrome. Whatever your taste or your favourite genre hopefully the mixes of Handle Me will appease each need and desire. For those out there who wanted the "Nazi" insult restored rather than rewound, well all the mixes have done as wished. Handle Me itself is a pretty sharp song but with those mixes the song is upgraded & secured its position as one of 2007's moments of pop!

Critical thanks

Thank you Grace!

MISS MATCH Breathe In/Breathe Out-Video and Single cover!

A few days ago Emma & Carin posted the new video to DontStopthePop but due to my issues I couldn't complete the article but now finally I've got round to it. Above is the single cover posted to DontStopthePop by the songs writer Felix. Breathe In/Breathe Out was certainly a stand-out song on the ultra tight debut Miss Match album Just Press Play which you can purchase through the wonderful people at CDON.

Now its getting its own time to shine and as you'll hear on the video for the song exclusively posted on the girls myspace page, it has also been given a little bit of a touch-up. Yes, they've recorded a brand new version just for the single release! If you don't fancy checking out the new single mix for the new version you can access it through the myspace created for Cocktail Studios (more on them laters). Now I love Miss Match so I don't need to wax lyrical about their brilliance! It simply beams through. Since they broke out in the national levels of the Swedish Eurovision they've released one of the strongest pop albums of 2007 and back in June 2007 Don't Stop The Pop featured a review and an exclusive track given by the girls especially to the people of this very site! They are absolute stars! Raise a glass to Miss Match!

However I also wanna take this moment to credit the brilliant song-writing team behind Breathe In/Breathe Out: the delightful Felix Persson & Märta Grauers (aka Cocktail Studios). Breathe In/Breathe Out, especially the single mix, sounds very much it could be something that the Knife or Robyn/Kleerup could conceive on their next albums only Miss Match, Felix Persson & Märta add a huge twist of pop. For this reason alone, the song soars into its own zone that rarely gets dreamt of let alone recorded & released. Raise a glass to Cocktail Studios!

So what next from Miss Match? The girls have told me that they'll take Just Press Play as far as it is possible & then see what happens next. I am hoping for another album, like soon! Will the new version of Breathe In/Breathe Out persuade you to vote in the Pop Awards? The girls have two nominations (Best album and Best Girlband). Act soon as the voting will finish by the next weekend!!

Coming Up This Week: Something cool from Jonah & Robyn!

KYLIE X & Dont Stop The Pop!

What seems years ago now, I spoke to two girls who worked at EMI France. They've soon moved on to glam jobs in the fashion industry but back then it was rather juicy to get all the gossip ala France. We giggled about the new Kylie album and ruminated ideas about Kylie's new album. They didn't know much so most of it was speculative. What were her producers, writers and so forth. And then we played the title game. I said what about "Kylie-X"? Cooooooooool. We giggled some more and that was that. Then an email came a few weeks later that "Kylie-X" was now the nickname the album was given amongst certain staffers. Then I posted news about the work-in-progress title on this blog and it was picked up on Kylie's famous unofficial messageboard SayHey. For evidence check it out for yourself on this very site (note my tragic grammar) and on Say Hey itself. That was about February 2007! Oddly, the title is actually X!

According to reports coming out from Popjustice and Kylie.com, the new album by Kylie due for release in November is to be titled Kylie X. This is odd. Very odd. The name came from a chatty friday afternoon in Paris. It took off in the offices of EMI and online but I never thought it could ever actually be the title of Kylie's tenth album. At the time the tabloids were saying the name was Lessons. Personally I am waiting until I have the album in my hand before I truly believe the title is actually called Kylie X.....only because its incredibly unfathomable that a coffee break could have resulted in something as cool as this. Titles must come from somewhere and announcing them usually comes six weeks in advance of their release. Don't Stop The Pop, it would seem, called it as early the 3rd of February. Am I permitted a little scream of delight. Strange & rather surreal delight too! Now I am fully aware that titles can change and one awaits official confirmation of the title. But if Kylie's tenth album is called Kylie X-how fucking glam is that! If it isnt-who cares as it looks to be a rather great album!!

NB: The tracklisting currently going around does not include Steve Andersons Flowers. So at the moment I am just a tad suspicious of the latest information surrounding the latest details and its aforementioned title. It needs proper confirmation....

EDIT: Its called KYLIE-X! OH MY! Kylie.com has confirmed it. But I won't believe it until I hold the cd.

RAUL Loca/Facil De Amar

Snippet of both Loca & Facil De Amar here: Zshare
Buy the album here: ElCorteIngles

I'd been meaning to write an article on Raúl since Don't Stop the Pop begun but oddly I've never got round to it so now seems to be the perfect time. Why? Because I didn't know what to write about after Jonah Hedqvist. I've been in a bit of a predicament-before deciding on Raúl, I had no idea what to follow the Swedish legend. I mean how to do you top Jonah? All my favourite acts are still recording their albums so everything else is just on the verge of becoming something. Robyn, Caracola, Pay-TV and the sublime Miss Match and et al are all just about to do something. But not quite yet though. I couldn't write an article with a "watch this space". That wouldn't be right. So as you can see Jonah was a bit of a tough act to follow. Who on earth could ever appear after the DontStopthePop legend?

Its not like its a weak week for pop music at the moment. You have Booty Luv, September and BwO all appearing left, right and centre. I thought of writing something about those releases but you know what? Other blogs do that and much better than I could ever think of! I love PosterGirls sublime review of Septembers new release for example.

Anyway, I found Raúl and cursed myself for not thinking about him sooner! Still, better late than never! But alas trouble stirred once again. His new LP suffers from one thing-too many good songs! I spoke to his record company. They didn't mind as long as it was one. So then became an epic difficulty of wondering on earth was I going top pick? I couldn't sleep at night! It was a predicament of biblical proportions! I loved two tracks in particular! The jazz poptastic song Loca and the beautiful classical song Facil De Amar! Which one!

Loca is a onslaught of poppy catchiness that refers to Chicago, All That Jazz and er yeh, the swinging 1930s-40s! It takes you right there-the smoky rooms of 1940's Barcelona.

Facil De Amar refers to Mozart, Robyn's Dream On and Led Zeppelin. In many ways it reflects his entire album (his 6th by the way!). It also could be on the next Linda Bengtzing album . Yes, its perhaps the first ever Spanish Swedish Schlager pop song. It could have been Spains Eurovision entry. And would have won. Its that catchy! Whereas Loca takes you to the 20th century, Facil De Amar is all over the place. First your at the Tudor court of Queen Elizabeth and then your Cher gig when she was pumping out her wonderful rock anthems on ships with yummy sailors riding huge weapons. And then with the chorus Raul takes you to anABBA concert.

Decisions, Decisions!

So you know what? I couldn't decide. Snippets of both songs have been molded together. I am sorry. I couldn't make the decision. I wimped out. They are just too good. I am tragical! Sorry kids!

Who is Raul!? Oh nothing but a Spanish icon! A pop legend too. It is only fitting that after Jonah must come Raul! Every song he has ever released whether it be his hit single Baila:

or something like this or his failed Eurovision entry I Love You Mi Vida:

(Won by boyband D-Nash in the end!)

Raul has always put on a rather good show! If your into your Helena Paparizou's you'll really like his earlier work. Its his new album that reveals a sound that transcends his earlier Europop sound, a bit more adult(y) and has thus sent his sales into the stratosphere. There are rumours that the well-produced album, entitled Una Vida (a tribute to G-Nash perhaps?), is being translated and re-recorded into English which is quite unusual for Spanish acts these days. Especially considering Raul can depend on his huge South American audience...perhaps latinpop is back but this time just don't mention Ricky Martin or Paulina Rubio and whatever you do - keep that term "spanglish" back on the beach of 1999!

JONAH HEDQVIST The Best Male Popstar Since, like, whenever! (An Introduction of Sorts!)

Hear the entire song and show your love on his myspace (here)

There are many male pop acts at the moment. All are great and sublime but none as refreshing as Mr.Jonah Hedqvist. His single Summer High is currently shooting up the Swedish charts and has become a DontStopthePop legend. He's always been a firm favourite of DontStopthePop but now I can safely say that he is one of few acts that reaffirm why this blog (still) exists. This needs some explaining. Unlike so many other acts who have to be pulled, wrenched and hurled from the closet once their sexuality is revealed Jonah did it the other way round. He is extremely proud of who he is and to me is the first male musician who might be seen as a role model for young gay boys who often see male singers come out through trouble, scandal or after the sun has set on the performer's career.

On the contrary Jonah really never came out-it just is what it is. Now usually I don't make an issue about sexuality but this singer is fucking cool. So much so he was Mr.Gay Sweden. I feel like all those pride marches I went to as a kid and teenager has finally resulted in an act that is up there waiving the rainbow flag with you. So, Jonah is a star. An out and very happy popstar. So what makes him a legend?

Last year, he was due to perform his previous single "Once In A Lifetime" at Stockholm Pride but after leaving a gay bar he was attacked in a vicious hate crime. This is what he had to say on the subject-

"I heard a few steps behind me and got a glimpse of a couple of silhouettes. Then everything went black. There was blood all over the place and I had two big gashes in my head. The whole situation was very hard to understand and still is. I got a pretty bad concussion but I refused to stay in bed for my performance at the big Closing Pride Show. Then it would have felt like they had won. The thought of being followed and beat to the ground for the sake of being gay scares me. This might seem like a chiche, but the assault changed me in the way that I do appreciate life and my friends even more. This last year music has been therapy for me, so i put all my emotions in writing lyrics."

This is the man gay mags should be featuring on their front covers!

So to the music. Ok, there are three singles by Jonah. The first two were ultra camp and extremely sublime. His take on I am What I am is the best cover of the song since the French musical first appeared some twenty years ago in the La Cage Aux Folles by Jerry Herman. And yes, I think its better than Gloria Gaynor's epic version! Theres something about the deep voice of Jonah singing the song that really brings out the essence that made it the rallying cry of the Gay Pride movement. When sung by a woman, whether it be the Gaynor, the Bassey or the Marti Webb something is lost. I don't know why or how but perhaps the song was meant to be sung by a man who was proud of who he is despite what the world threw at him. The production is helped out by the inclusion of the schlager legend Shirley Clamp taking the helms on the backing vocals. Its an epic song by a man singing about coming out of the closet just as the original was in the original stage production. For this reason alone it surpasses all the amazing disco covers done by those wonderful diva's previously mentioned above.

The second single was the anthemic Once In a Lifetime which follows in the same uplifting spirit of I Am What I am. Clearly dedicated to Eurovision, Once In A Lifetime is part-Kylie and part-Dannii. Its a track Alcazar would love to record as it brings a huge smile to your face. Indeed, the song sounds like the template for the recent albums released by his fellow Swedish singers Magnus Carlsson and Danny.

Now its his latest single that has secured his status as "DONTSTOPTHEPOPS finest male act of 2007". Forget Mika, Robbie, Magnus! And leave that Danny at home! This is the sound of the most exciting Swedish male pop act of 2007 and next year. Forget Sweden-lets break down the borders, I personally think Summer High could be the best pop song by a male singer in the world so far this year. Am I being over the top? Well its so catchy its unbelievable, ever so kitchy, ever so witty and ultra pop it makes you immediately run out and dance in the streets wearing very little (if the weather is nice of course!). Coming in at under 3 minutes long, the song is too addictive to describe but is perhaps the most perfect and concise pop song I've come across by a male singer in ages!

If theres anyone in the UK from the music industry reading this they need to sign this boy immediately. Jonah has told me the album is nearly done and you can't fault a boy whose dream it is to represent the UK at Eurovision. So in the next couple weeks of expect to see more on and about Jonah as DontStopthePop follows his music, his career and his self journey through the world of pop and as a gay boy myself it makes me so proud that Jonah is literally out there doing something great with his music.

Thank you to Jonah and all at Pyjama Records
When the album is out you'll be able to buy it here (CDON)

B-Tween do a Q-A with Don't Stop The Pop

B-tween are a very DontStopthePop act. Not only are they members of a girlband but they originated out of another girlband called E.M.M.A (a name created from the first letter in the girls first names like Raen and Clea). After E.M.M.A released three albums, two of the girls left the group and conceived of a new group and have called it B-tween. Its very early days yet but they've already recorded some amazing stuff like the wonderful pop smash Dangerzone and Reaching For The Stars. Martina Ståhl and Alexandra Pettersson clearly have their sights set on the pop girlband crown in Sweden and they are clearly up for the ride. Their 2008 looks to be very exciting. They refuse to stop the pop - indeed the chorus in one of their new songs includes the repeated lyric "We pop until we drop" which to me makes them classic Dont Stop The Pop act...and therefore DSTP had to talk to them!

----

"Hello B-Tween!!!!

The reaction on Dangerzone has been very positive. What will you name your first B-Tween album when time comes?
We have no idea, perhaps Dangerzone!

Perhaps, an early christmas present for pop lovers around the world?

Thats what we are hoping for ans we are trying our best to make it happen!

At the moment, songs like Reaching For The Stars, which includes the sublime lyric “we pop until we drop”, are zooming up my most-played lists on my Ipod. What do you want your album to sound like?

Nice! Mostly pop of course.. We want the sound to match our style and our listeners!

What would say was the best Swedish song released in 2007 (so far)?

We both like Septembers new song "Can't get over it"...

What do you think of Robyn and her making an impact in the UK?

It's great, and we wish her all the best!

Would you ever consider coming over here (the UK or any territory outside Sweden really?)

Of course!! It will make our dream come true!

Well fellow Swedish girl-duo LuckyTwice are huge in Spain. Would you follow suit and release something there? Spanish radio would love Reaching For the Stars and Dangerzone!!

Yeah, we would love to release something in Spain as in every other country.

You’ve both been in the music industry for ages. Would you ever decide to set up your own record company…and what would you call it?

Answer: Actually we haven't thought about it.. But we wish use our experience and it would be fun to work with music in a different way!

What was it like during your E.M.M.A days?
It was the best time in our lifes! E.M.M.A. gave ous a lot of experience and it made us who we are today! Because of the young age we had a lot of responsibility..

What is your favourite E.M.M.A song? Mine has to be Det bästa av allting är du! I can’t understand a word but it gets my butt moving without failure!

Haha, that sounds great! Our favourite E.M.M.A. song must be "Tur och Retur".

What made E.M.M.A go it separate ways? (How did the E.M breakaway from the M.A?)

We consideredthe music in emma, and we decided that we wanted to sing in a more mature way. So we stared a duo together, because we were the oldest in the group, and our voices are different but very suitable togehter.

What is/was your favourite Swedish rival girlband? Excellence? Miio? NG3?

We both think that it was NG3! They had a good sound!

Bitchtime: what Swedish act made you want to raise a middle finger and think “we can do much better than that!”. In a nice way of course!

Hmmm, it must be when Bubbles performed in the Swedish "Eurovision Songcontest".

Ok, back to B-Tween! How did you girls come up with the name…?

Answer: Because we are in a "B-Tween age" (middle age) and we thought it sounds cool =)

Your songs are so camp. In the recording studio, when your playing about with ideas, tracks and beats..have you said “lets make this poppier!”
Now I love BwO, Alcazar and the Army of Lovers. But I’ve got a feeling that B-Tween could be a girlband version of BWO/Alcazar. Does that crown fit?
Yes, maybe more like Alcazar than Bwo!

Quickfire section:

Dannii Minogue Or Kylie?
Kylie Minogue

Alcazar or BwO?

Alcazar

Cosmo4 or Bubbles?

Cosmo4

B-Tween or E.M.M.A?

B-Tween, the "E.M.M.A.-days" are over (hehehe)

And lastly is the Dangerzone a hot or dry place?

A hot place, of course ;-)

I so think Beautiful Thing could be made into a musical. Link

Mikey of PopTrashAddicts delievers another brilliantly written piece on the Australian pop princess Brielle Davis. Not only only did he quite evidently have a great time at the gig itself but you can totally sense the happiness of the entire evening. I am sure theres more he hasn't told us but such is the energy in his words you feel almost there. The lucky boy will see Robyn perform this friday. I want all the details! Link

Coming up: DSTP's interview with B-tween, Soraya and something amazing from Robyn!

JOURNEY SOUTH DO LONDON (The Embassy Rooms)

Ok, Ok! Truth be told Journey South were never DSTP's kinda cup of tea. I love my pop and its gotta be about friday night with the girls, lipstick and should be able to make that butt whiggle.

Alas, the boys put on a preview showcase tonight. Listening to the album performed by the band, I was stunned that my first impressions were deeply misplaced. The album sounded more like the much-loved but worryingly forgotten male duo from the U.S-Ringside (see them here in a song covered by Enrique Inglesias). Their brand of acoustic pop - with its stress on the impressive vocals - whipped the energy into some kind of maelstrom of emotions that had my best mate pining for the album.

Despite a short set the event was packed and consequent applauses were well-deserved. I am trying to recall it all but as of writing its all a bit of a blur.

Why?

Ahem

Well Clea were also at the showcase. After the concert, I chatted with the girls and, yes, I blubbered and melted like a scouse fool that I am. We chatted about Robyn, the new album (its half done fans!) and China. Aimee looked stunning, Emma looked fierce and her twin sis Sara looked even fiercer! I am a *huge* fan of the girlband and I was like totally nattering away but alas I think I melted. Melted like a really lovely butterscotch Caramac bar in the summer sun. I am an incredibly shy boy and the girls were so nice it kinda made me wanna laugh inside. I even cut Emma off as she was talking about the state of pop in the UK and how 2008 looked. Sorry Emma! (I was just totally nervous!) After a few hugs, I was skiing on cloud 9.

T'was a great concert, Clea, great event and Journey South revealed an album that I actually seemed to love DESPITE being way out of my pop comfort zone. Then we - went with my old school friend - perked off to Starbucks in Borders and chatted about how great the band were and my mate confessed her old-school crush on Kavana. I proceeded to spill the latte all over me. Cute no?

Edit: The Sheila's Wheels were also at the event in all their pink get-up. As was Kavana! The mini-hotdogs were lovely too.

Second Edit: Details about Clea's up and coming are a bit sketchy. Only because I melted and my memory is all over the place tonight. I know fans are really interested...and believe me so am I! The girls are going for a full blown pop album. The vibe I am feeling about their third album will be primarily about going out with your best mates. Only half-done (its due for release come March 2008), its an album that might sound a bit Kylie when she was still in her hotpants, a bit of Bootyluv and taking that sound that Clea initially created on Trinity to a higher level. As such, its gonna be an album firmly for the mirrorball enthusiasts out there. Perhaps an Mirrorball LoveAffair? The Confessions on a Dancefloor? Naw, more like Anthems of the Dance Generation! So yeah, pop all over!!

BTW: The ever so democratic Pop Awards are coming to an end very soon so get voting. "Don't Stop The Pop Award For Not Stopping The Pop (aka the LifeTime Award/or DontStopthePop Hall Of Fame)" will be announced very shortly too.

BTW: Next Up on DSTP...the interview with B-tween!

Some Words From Mary Cherry

Just a quick post really to say that I've not been this excited about music in a very long time...

Yes there is some great new music out there from the likes of Robyn (OK so not completely new), M.I.A, Izabel and our hot Spanish himbos - in fact the list goes on...

But in the next few months we're gonna see new material from No Angels, the Minogues - with Dannii having 4 releases coming up next month! - Melissa Etheridge - OK she's not pop as such but she's brilliant - and Britney. The Moto Blanco mix of JLo's new track as gay as and the new Michael Jackson track that's leaked is great and Whitney's gone back to Clive Davis! Not forgetting The Return of the Spice Girls Tour tickets going on sale in less than a month!

Yes it seems many of my favourite stars of yesterday are returning to form! Now if only someone could organise a Steps reunion, get Sonia re-signed and make Madonna realise that she was better when she was slutty, my music world would be a happy place!

And don't forget to vote in the Pop Awards!

DANNII MINOGUE

Dannii Minogue is an interesting individual. Some fans often argue that she's not always looked after in the best way by her various record companies. This post isn't about shortcomings and failures but I will add that its sad and simple fact which speaks for itself-by March 2008 it will be five years since Dannii produced a brand new studio album (the wonderful pop album Neon Nights).

Now she graces X Factor and people are beginning to wonder why she's there. What has she done that wasn't connected to sister? How can she be the judge of talented singers when she hasn't even had a number one single?

I'm not going to make this a fan piece about Dannii's, sometimes, chequered history. For sure, I like the girl but like the best of popstars shes had her bad days. I won't dwell on these moments because...why be negative? In fact, Dannii is probably the most talented person to sit and judge on other singers. Certainly more so than the creator of Westlife, Simon Cowell and Sharon Osbourne.

I come to this decision purely based on one single performance. Its of Dannii when she replaced Tina Arena and a song performed usually by Celine Dion. Playing the whore Esmerelda, Dannii Minogue took to the stage of the West End and saved the production from closing when it initially received a rough ride on its premier by reviewers. Wikipedia brushes aside Dannii's time in the huge musical as a mere footnote but Tina Arena's name and stay in the production could not keep bums on seats. It was Dannii that kept the show alive in London for longer than the critics had expected. Sadly, being a "replacement" the reviews of Dannii's time in the show are non-existent. However, Dannii's success with Notre Dame secured an extended run for the beleaguered musical.

So the song itself is actually pretty tragic. Its not the sort that usually perks the brow of Don't Stop The Pop. Still, to me however, Dannii's performance exposes those sparkles of pop running through her veins and moreover, the vocal ability to judge other singers. You simply can't get away with not being able to sing in a musical for two whole years. People would be demanding their tickets back if Dannii didnt have the talent. So, when detractors declare that Dannii's X Factor position is somehow based on her sister are evidently wrong. Dannii performed the belter of a song for 6 nights for months and this alone Dannii demands her dues.....

VIVA SPANISH POP MUSIC (and Soraya y ValeMusic)

Today I was supposed to go to a party put on by the current Queen Of Pop-Ms.Robyn but as life would have its not meant to be. So, I'll just say this-to those going to the Friday concert have a great time (I'll be at the Scala date instead). This evening's post is about the sublime record company that is ValeMusic. They've given us pop lovers some amazing trinkets in their history and this must be applauded. At this present time, LuckyTwice have seen their cd album released all but in one country: Spain through ValeMusic. Their Swedish record company has gone silent on its release despite the act actually being Swedish!

As such ValeMusic never lets the Spanish pop public down. Not only does it release its now legendary "Disco Estrella" collections but it provides wonderful-no glorious-pop for the population of the world. This is a short list of just some of the sublime acts ValeMusic has given us: Jose Galisteo, Natalia, Luckytwice, David Bisbal, Nuria, Daniel Zueras, Merche and of course Spain's first Idol Rosa!

To punctuate Spain's wonderful relationship with pop I want to refer to the singer Soraya who is just about to release her 3rd album. Her 2005 album was Corazón De Fuego ("Heart of Fire") and a huge success on its release. This album was a pop disco polemic and its sales equaled it! However it was the second album-consisting of covers-that secured her position as a rival to Edurne, Rosa Lopez and Natalia. It included a rather amazing cover of Self Control…which was later picked up the Danish supertrash pop group Infernal as a great song to cover. Other 1980's classics included Don't You Want Me (Human League), Just Can't Get Enough (Depeche Mode), High Energy (Evelyn Thomas) and Because The Night (Patti Smith).

Ochenta's' is now one of the most successful albums of 2007 in Spain and has become platinum after many weeks in the charts. Still, it was probably her cover of “Call Me” that sealed much of the sales. As you’ll see if you just play the video Soraya walked right into “GAY ICON” land by donning lurid yellow hotpants, dusting in green earrings, playing with fish in a tiara and riding a strange exercise bike. She also got some random Spanish individuals to sing a long to the pop song in true “pop vox” style. Included were four girls out on a “girls night out” and two gay boys that literally lift their shirts.

Ochenta’s success resulted in Jose Galisteo’s “twin brother” album Remember which saw similar success. For Soraya however it secured a follow-up. A sequel. A volume 2! Which is getting released very soon! The lead single is an amazing version of La Dolce Vita:

The video is equally camptastic as the one commissioned for Call Me. It starts off a bit like Dannii’s Can’t Sleep At Night and reveals Soyaya’s bed is actually upright! Wow! Then she does a little Whigfield ala “Saturday night” which then quickly evolves into a poptastic cheap but very effective set of clips of her dancing with smart men. Yes it’s a cover, yes its highly unoriginal but its everything one could ever want from a pop princess and by golly they do everything to improve on the original versions.

Soraya Arneles-a girl who knows her pop released on a record company that does everything to give pop a good chance in the charts! And it always pays off. ValeMusic is one of the finest record companies in Europe.
